we are told by scientitsta the universe was created by a big bang and the universe is constantly expanding as a result of this, but what thing banged in the first place, surely by the laws of nature something must have been created in the first place to bang. If you take the Biblical line that God is the creator then surely by same reckoning God must have had some origin himself. Help cant help but feel the universe and life as we know it is just a huge impossibility. I really need to get laid more i think!!!

Firstly, the big bang is only a theory. A theory that is supported and accepted by a lot of scientists, but it is not fact. I think the 'thing that banged' was called a singularity. A concept I'm sure a lot of us would find hard to comprehend. Like the existence of nothing is hard (inpossible?) to comprehend. Here's a good little Q&A website : http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/kids_space/qastr_bang .html

cheers obonio checked ure link gives a good theoretical answer but again a bit vague about what went before the bang but i guess its just one of those questions we'll never know the true answer to. It all depends whether you believe in Science/God/or both.
In the begining there was nothing. From this God made it all. Hard to believe, hard to grasp. That is the clever bit. Think about it, there must have been a creator for all the bits to come together and a very clever one. Just see how hard it is to get 6 winning lotto numbers out of 50. If it was simple there would be no need for faith and faith is really the key. I rest my case.
Understanding the Big Bang is sometimes difficult for people. It helps if you understand a bit more about the state of the universe just after the big bang. People just asume that all the stars, planets, rocks and gas in the universe were all just one tiny lump smaller than a pea. this is not true as cosmically nothing existed until quite a while after the big bang. what actually exploded was energy (protons, Nuetrons, electrons and lots of other small things) think of it like a spark! As the universe expanded there was enough room for these 'Particles' to start interacting with each other. they soon formed Atoms starting with Hydrogen. (One Proton, One Nuetron, and one Electron) which is an explosive gas! and the universe was VERY hot at that time. After even more time gravity started to affect things grouping these atoms into clusters what we now know as stars! and the life cycle of a star and it going supernova leads to the creation of more complex atoms. The only really difficult thing to understand is what did the Big Bang explode into? Which is the same question as, What does the universe expand into? Theres some REALLy interesting theorys on that one i can tell you.
Uriah Heep. Nonsense, there are still lottery winners all the time. Last time i checked, none of them was 'God' Quantum probability, We DO exist, therefore the probabilty of us iexisting is 1:1 Q.E.D
Bob a Job Are you sure? Many have entertained angels unaware.
Are you sure? Many have spent there lives chasing rainbows.
The Ponderer, it's an unusual reason for your last comment but as good as any other
Ah! But who has the biggest pot of gold?
Uriah. Proove to me god exists and i will turn my back on science.
Bob (the patience of)Job Do not give up on science. It proves many things. Many ideas are just theories. The Bible does not promote ideas, just facts. Remember after all his thinking Plato came so close. So close but yet so far. The Bible has the answer for everything. Better men than you or I have debated this and the best any one can come up with is faith. I have very little but it is all I have got as an answer for you. I am not religious, just trying to find a better answer.
To ask "what was there before the Big Bang?" is like asking "what is on the other side of the edge of a ping-pong ball?" or "what were you doing in 1850?", i.e. it is a meaningless question with no answer. "Before" the Big Bang, there was no time, so there couldn't have been any "before".
Good point bernardo. That's boggled my brain a little.
the god or science argument really is unneccesary when you think that the first thing had to be created (this was done by god) this thing then changed, expanded n what ever else science allows things to do to create other things.
"Proove to me god exists and i will turn my back on science. " So said Bob A Job. It's obvious that he knows nothing about Science since he gets the structure of the hydrogen atom wrong and that fact that hydrogen is an explosive gas is totally irrelevant. Hopefully he will turn his back sooner than later and not post any more silly answers :-)
I like Ricky Gervais' take on this - in the beginning God created heaven and Earth... and then God said let there be light - so he created heaven and Earth in the dark! Which I guess explains a lot!!

but by the same token then simmy d why can't we argue "what is the origin of God" if natural laws equate to the universe then why not to God too? Its like a Computer program you can't always see it running all the time sometimes theres nothing you can see to prove its existence but the whole time it is there and someone must have created it. ( I know its possibly blasphemous to compare God to a computer program but only example can think of to compare)
Uriah, you say the Bible has the answer to everything. It doesn't tell me how to eat spaghetti!
the bible promotes facts? hmmm in the beginning there was. now it is. hard to grasp, not to believe. why does the universe have to have a purpose or a beginning?
why does everybody worry too much about facts, theorys or how the world began why cant people just live their life and be happy we are only here for a short time and should just accept things as they are and be happy you were put on this earth. x
