I have a new free-standing electric cooker with a double oven. The main oven has a fan but......the fan goes off when the oven has reached the set temperature and only kicks in again when the temp drops. I can't believe this is supposed to happen. Has anyone experienced anything similar?
Precisely my thoughts! I've had fan ovens before and the fan has always been on when the main oven is being used. I've never come across an intermittent one.
On my gas oven, when the required temp is reached, the flame drops. On my old fan oven, when the required temp was reached, the fan would drop or stop. This to me seems common practise for all ovens, when they reach the right temp, to stop increasing the heat. To do this, they cut off the element making heat. In your case a fan.
spath,
the fan has nothing to do with the heating.
The heating element has a thermostatic control, so when the set temperature is reached, it switches the heater off. The fan moves air around, giving more even temperature throughout the oven. The fan should stay on, to maintain even temperature.
The general consensus seems to be that my oven is not acting as it should and is faulty. I've spoken to Hotpoint already but of course I only reached a youth who clearly had no idea about ovens and merely read bits of the manual to me - guess what? I'd already done that! I also think the temp control is up the creek i.e. not nearly as hot as it should be. I've just ordered an oven thermometer so I can check it and go back to Hotpoint with facts.
