In a friends garden we had two trees cut down with just the stumps left, about 9ins high and 18ins diameter.. Without the expense of using an expert how can i get rid of the above ground stumps? Any suggestions please.

Bore holes in the stump and pour creosote in.
I thought creosote was banned, Danny.
Oops, sorry. Other alternative is to hire a chainsaw.
Or... hire a stump grinder.
We have always kept tree stumps quite high, grown climbers up and around them and sat life size realistic birds of prey on top of them!
A wee splash of diesel down the bored holes should do the trick.

Or you could buy stump killer.
Best thing is having it done by the professionals when the tree is cut down. I'm having a dead one done soon.
Last tree had cut down, and had to leave stump in as inaccessible for stump remover , the stump kept reshooting for years.
I would do what Pat does but want to plant another tree there.
I don't think a chemical solution will work - grind them down or dig them up.
Quick fix..grinder
20 year fix...stump killer
I too have stumps of two trees. My neighbour bored holes into them and I poured petrol through the holes. That was last year and so far so good.
I would never use petrol or diesel or a stump killer on our garden, or weed killers, except on the shingle drive. We have an organic semi wild garden.
Hollow them out, fill the void with compost and plant them up. Trailing ivy would hide the stump.
From the RHS (where they know a thing or two about gardening, I believe):

The best way to get rid of them is to dig a small trench around them just 3 or 4 inches deep & then build a fire over & around them & they will burn away.
Love Melvs idea. Lots of nice places then for birds and insects. It makes good use of the stumps then.
If you drill holes into the surface, make sure you plug the holes with clay or cover the stumps with polythene to stop the rain washing it out. Some rock salt should do it.
I had a couple of stumps, just a few feet apart, and nailed a plank across them to make a simple rustic bench.
Great idea chipchopper. There is do much you can do to make features from stumps.
We paid a local chap to remove them with a stump ginder. £70 well spent. Ask on Facebook for a garden handy person in your area.
