To me it seems equally embarrassing not to be able to tell friends and family where you're working. And people aren't daft, they must guess that you're not in a dream job, aren't making your way up some sort of career ladder...
The agency that called you probably arranges temporary staff to fill an immediate position which is why they wanted you to start straight away. You need to find an agency that finds long term employment. You also have to change your attitude. Stop dwelling on the past, Stop the drunken nights out. Be prepared to work all shifts and don't ask for days off for personal reasons, hairdresser etc. Be realistic in what you are capable of doing. Try supermarkets, basic cleaning, shelf stocking or temporary Xmas jobs.
Abbey, never ever be embarrassed by the job that you do. Never. No job should embarrass you and not a single person has the right to judge you.
Many years ago when I ran my own business, overnight my work dried up due to a recession. Admittedly, it was only a few weeks before I was back on my feet again, but in that period, I tried everything to get a job - including seeing if the factory where my BF worked at the time needed someone to sweep the floors. I did waitressing and bar work (which has actually proved very useful since at least I can add up stuff very quickly and carry 4 plates of food).
If someone judges you for the job you do, it says more about them than it does you.

Hmm, I ask the same question.
Maybe because you're a figment of your own imagination or possibly you're a figment of AB'S imagination, designed to keep threads flowing with lots of answers from people that appear concerned with your mental health π€
Who knows?
