it would be 4 weeks hols or maybe 5 for management, which is 20 or 25 days, then depends on what ytou get for bank hols, I get paid time and a half if i wortk them, so that gives me 4 hours lieu per bank hol, or i just have the bank hols as a paid normal working day and stay at home. i am retail manager though, a bank or other non-retail firm would be closed anyway.

This is a how long is a piece of string question without knowing more about the sector or working pattern.

There is a legal minimum now, but that doesn't mean it's typical as many employers were exceeding this already.

If you want a benchmark a 9-5, 5 days a week job in the private sector is likely to offer you 20 to 25 paid days per year plus the 8 public holidays. Lieu days are a contractual arrangement only.

antiguru; the length of your string is 2x the distance from the middle

I get 20 days + all bank hols + xmas eve to new year.

About 31 days I guess in total.

Many people who work in more 'mundane' jobs, e.g. production line workers within the food industry, receive the statutory minimum leave which is 4 times the number of days worked each week. (i.e. for people who work a 5 day week, this is just 20 days per year including all bank holidays). I've got no statistical evidence but, based upon the job advertisements here in semi-rural East Anglia, I'd suggest that this would apply to at least 30% of the local working population.

I'm now self-employed (or, by the way my finances are looking, self-unemployed!) but my last employed position, in the customer service sector of the rail industry, had a total of 29 days holiday per year for the first 5 years, and 34 days per year thereafter.

Your post asks for the 'typical' annual leave. Once again, I've no statistical evidence but employers in this area seem to fall into two large groups. As I've indicated, because East Anglia is fairly rural. There are many food production companies where 20 days leave is normal, even for management positions. However, my nearest main town is Ipswich which is a major centre for the insurance industry. Most posts which are advertised within this sector offer a minimum of 30 days leave per year. For more senior posts the leave entitlement is often around 40 days per year.

It all depends, I work for the government and get 13 bank/public holidays + 25 days to be taken as and when I want
