some people mock those on quiz shows who don't know what a funambulist is, others mock Mensa members who don't know what Greek is. We all have our own little amusements.

I knew I meant to say Latin/Greek stop trolling.
c'mon TTT smile and make JNO's answer the best answer :)
I did not know what a funabulist was (might have been able to guess if there were clearly wrong alternatives - what were the other choices?) but I DID KNOW what a sagar maker's bottom knocker was, a teacher once told us about it in school (hants not staffs), presumably knowing children for the delightful congregation of both bottoms and knockers in a job title
Sadly that teacher in Hampshire who told the class about saggy bottoms or whatever would probably be fired today for using bottom and knockers!
Anybody who watched "What's My Line" all those years ago would have known what a "Sagger maker's bottom knocker" was.
At the risk of sounding big headed, I knew what it was …. !
Have you just given your age away, burlyshirley?
The women with the bandana who got the question wrong was not an English teacher -she clearly stated she had been in IT and had travelled all over the world with the dot com companies. She said she was now an English Tutor which is something completely different and you don't even need to be qualified.
That's right Aunt Polly and said she'd love to go back to Madeira ? If she had the choice
I remember WML bhg, with Lady Isobel Barnet ( she got done for nicking coffee if my memory serves me right) Gilbert Harding, Barbara Kelly and Bernard Braden with Eamon Andrews , howzat!
Nope, it was a can of Tuna and a carton of cream she stole, it was Richard Madley who nicked a jar of coffee :0/
Actually bhg, I was talking about funambulist ! (haha).
The women with the bandana who got the question wrong was not an English teacher

and this thread had such promise when it started out.
Question Author
well if she's Tutor I'd expect her to have a working knowledge.
Promise of what?
It's in media tv and that's being discussed isn't it?
BHG, see answrs at
01:43 and 3:08
Bednobs - that's the disadvantage of not reading the whole thread.
Latin roots etc - eg Hippo = Horse, Pot=river, cera=Horn, camp=bell, can=dog etc etc so Hippopotamus = Big river horse, I could go on....

please do - I cd do with a bit of comedy

potamos - river - hippopotamus is river horse
big river horse would be mega-hippopotamos

[think blackadder: I hope he isnt a hippopotamos, if he turns over in bed he will squeesh me!
Blackadder: yes indeed madam]

canis - Latin, cynos - Gk darg - -- cynosure - centre of attention

The constellation that this bright star appears in is known to English speakers today as Ursa Minor, or the Little Dipper, but the Ancient Greeks called it Kynosoura, a term that comes from a phrase meaning "dog's tail." "Kynosoura" passed into Latin and Middle French, becoming "cynosure."

campanology
mixed - - ugh
from Late Latin campana, "bell"; and Greek -λογία, -logia)

ho hum, a bit surprised our mensa member er fell off the table on this one ....
er didnt read the writing on tablet....
So no one else had to learn segments of The Students' Companion for homework, with a test to follow?
// Actually bhg, I was talking about funambulist ! (haha).//

yes! and if TTT were a funambulist
we cd say on this thread
funabulist auto-suspends ! ( hangs himself ) haw haw haw

yeah and another thing
Nope, it was a can of Tuna and a carton of cream she stole

serial stealer apparently, and she was strong on
" Ay hevnt taken anything you rotten lying prole!"

she ended up boiled in her bath. Given to putting an electric fire on in the Bathroom ( oh god you have to be demented to do THAT!) and climbed into the bath
Fire slipped and electrocuted her and then heated the water for three days .....
