I think it makes you a better driver if you do not pass your first practical test.
You realise you are not a wonderful driver just an average driver, and hopefully take more care.
I passed first time, am I a wonderful driver? Sadly not.

A friend of mine had to do an unscheduled emergency stop during his test.
This was in the days before seatbelts were compulsory, so the examiner's head smacked into the windscreen !
Yep........passed it in Chelmsford on a guaranteed pass scheme week course.....started on Monday am ( had a pretty good idea anyway )......had a brilliant instructor called Len, who was from West Ham in London. he picked me up at my stopover residential digs in Chadwell Heath at 7.30am every morning.....I drove to Chelmsford daily where I would learn till about 2.00pm and then home.. test on Friday morning......20/25 mins...all over.....I was lucky as i apparently got one of the down-to-earth and fair examiners at the centre... I was staying with a single mum and her young child at her house......she was lovely and we got on really well...still stay in contact to this day.

It beat running around on my little motorbike. :0)
1st time for me x
My test was first slot at the Test-centre on a Monday morning. My instructor (close-family friend) had let my Dad borrow his Driving-School car over the weekend so I could get some final driving practice in and then had a new clutch fitted to this Chevette on the Sunday.........:o(

I passed second time, though ; 2nd July 1981......and drove to school that afternoon. :o)

Surprising number of people passed first time.
I passed first time, 5 months after my 17th bithday. March 1968.
Second time, no theoretical in the UK
First time, theoretical (100%) and practical in the US
Truck Cat 3 and for Fuel Tankers, first time in Begium
Yes I passed first time - 1985 aged 31; despite sobbing all the way round the course! Am I a good drver? I like to think so, although I'm starting to dislike night-time driving.
sorry but my view is that if you fail three times then you arent cut out for being in control of a ton or of moving metal,

three strikes and out,

failing could be poor technique or nerves...neither of which is recommended for driving
Passed 1st time, after one 1 hour lesson before test.
Still a believer in the theory, that you only start to learn to drive, after you,ve passed the test.
I'd agree with that kinell. I also don't think a licence should be valid for as long as it is, I think people should be retested at the most every ten years.
...any idiot can/and do drive. =)
I believe I'm the record holder here - passed on my 7th attempt after 6 years of trying ( 6 fails with the same instructor, then finally went to BSM & passed). I believe it was more nerves which did not help. I gave myself a break for a couple of years then re-tried after a lot of encouragement & passed. Sometimes I think we try too hard. Am I a good driver - without a doubt. Never had an accident in 15yrs and I believe I'm a very considerate road user.
I st time.

Nightmare, did your friend pass?

Meg, I think you are the record holder you would not be if Kinell rules were applied.

Yogi, sounds like a good course.
1st time, with an eye that was half closed due to a rugby incident. Next door neighbour failed her 1st test....she ran-over a dog on the reverse turn oooerrr
OPassed 1st time in 1978. it was a doddle, wasnt scared at all, and sailed through it.I did love driving, so maybe that gave me more confidence.
Wouldnt like to have a test today, I'd fail miserably with all the knowledge that you have to have to pass a test.
m/bike licence 1st time, car licence 2nd time, PSV/PCV licence 1st time.

Total driving time 48yrs. After that amount of time I hope to think I'm a reasonably good driver.
Ah yes, back in September 1961 around the streets of Chester, my first task was to reverse round a corner. Not only did I go over the kerb with 2 wheels, I actually went over with all 4. Thinking I had failed I used the rest of the test for experience. Imagine my surprise when the examiner told me I had passed!

My three children were all taught by a local lady instructor and all passed first time after less than 30 lessons between them. My hat goes off to that instructor as the 3 of them are all extremely good and safe drivers. By the way, that instructor now teaches advanced driving to the Police.

ps....mrs jd also passed first time too

OK, trumpet blown
I passed first time

Most days I am a good driver but there I some days when I drive like an imbecile and the harder I try the worse I get
