I think it makes you a better driver if you do not pass your first practical test.
You realise you are not a wonderful driver just an average driver, and hopefully take more care.
I passed first time, am I a wonderful driver? Sadly not.
It took me three attempts. The first time I failed my examiner was being examined himself by someone in the back of the car. He failed me on not looking around enough when I was parking. Instructor was sure he would normally only give me a minor in normal circumstances.
Second time I hit a curb while parking. Otherwise a perfect test.
I passed on my fourth go. I had the same examiner each time and she was commonly know as the Dragon lady. She was horrible!! On my second test, she failed me for not putting my handbrake on at traffic lights. I had actually believed that I had passed until she nit picked on that!! :|
I passed 3rd time, my late wife 6th both both our boys passed 1st time - and they have both ended up with points on their licences whereas we have none.
I passed first time, but that was forty years ago.
The stats for a first pass at seventeen, which i did, was 42%, so I was very well chuffed.
Driving and other drivers today are a world away from those days, when everyone was patient with a learner, gave room and gave way etc. I would not like to learn and pass today!
I wouldn't say i'm an excellent driver but I am the only person out of all my friends that has not had an accident (touch wood). They all passed on their 1st and 2nd go.
Passed first time when I was 18 and my bike licence first time when I was 17. I would say I'm a average driver in a car but a good rider of a motorbike.
Passed at second attempt, July 1982 - 28 days after first attempt.
The examiner did say he could not understand how I had managed to fail the first time !
