That wonderful Artie Shaw recording! Sunday is gloomy, my hours are slumberless. Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless. Little white flowers will never awaken you, Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you. Angels have no thought of ever returning you. Would they be angry if I thought of joining you? Gloomy Sunday. Gloomy is Sunday; with shadows I spend it all. My heart and I have decided to end it all. Soon there'll be candles and prayers that are sad, I know. Death is no dream, for in death I'm caressing you. With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you. Gloomy Sunday. It was banned by the BBC during the war. There's a lot of the urban myth about this song http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/gloomy.htm
Some years ago the BBC ban was discussed in a programme "Listen to the Banned" about records which for one reason or another had had the green sticker applied.
And re-reading teh quotation I copied from a website, I think that some of the words are missing. I'll check later today.
I've spent more time checking this than for any other answer(!) These are the words as sung by Pauline Byrne on the Artie Shaw recording of 3 March 1940. Sunday is gloomy My hours are slumberless Dearest the shadows I live with are numberless Little white flowers Will never awaken you Not where the black coach Of sorrow has taken you Angels have no thought Of ever returning you Would they be angry If I thought of joining you? Gloomy Sunday Gloomy Sunday With shadows I spend it all My heart and I Have decided to end it all Soon there'll be candles And prayers that are said I know Let them not weep Let them know that I'm glad to go Death is no dream For in death I'm caressing you With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you Gloomy Sunday
Marc Almond did a version of it with Marc and the Mambas on the "Torment and Toreros" album.
