re HS2 i hope that rail prices are lowered, otherwise there's no incentive to use it. I just looked up a journey i want to do next week from Berkshire to Birmingham - it's going to cost over £120 to get there by 9 by train

Apparently ,according to this video link, a sandbag will not totally stop water ingress but helps to keep the worst away if the sandbag wall is built methodically and smaller weak spots are also protected i.e. air bricks.
This Aussie clip gives advice on using sandbags in flood situations.

Frankly I'd rather have my home flooded than my lambing shed at this time of the year. The 'shed' houses ewes just about to or in the process of giving birth to lambs, also mothers and babies waiting to get turned out , sickly lambs under heat lamps and orphan lambs getting bottle fed every four hours. Had the shed been flooded this time next week we would have been in dire straits as you can't move vulnerable animals quickly. You can't book them into a Holiday Inn or bed them down in a church hall somewhere.
The shed is now clear of water and with the wind blowing as hard as it is today, should be dried out by next week so we can bed it down with dry straw.
Mine is a minor inconvenience rather than a 'disaster' but I won't be told its not as important as a house flooding as in my opinion its worse.

APG, I think you may be wasting your time, the only time some folk see sheep is in a field when on holiday, the only other time they may pay attention is when its gone missing off the supermarket shelf, I hope then you realise its your fault, regardless of the elements. :0)
I'm afraid that farming and farmers have, and always will be taken for granted, and yet they are battling against the weather all year round, with very few complaints. But the complaints will fly in should that veg not be on the supermarket shelf just waiting to be picked up. A big percentage of folk who have had their homes flooded, can still shut the front door and turn up for work, the farmer is stuck with weeks of problems, big losses and greatly reduced income in the coming weeks/months.
