Since then, the Portuguese police have been so busy covering their own backs after their monumental balls up, they haven't co-operated with any constructive investigations.
But then ... everyone knows my view of foreign police forces.

It depends on the circumstances under which she is being asked the questions. The Portuguese authorities, when questioning the McCanns, were trying to pin the murder of their child on them, I'm pretty sure I would only be willing to answer questions that were conducive to actually finding my missing child.

"would have been prosecuted for child neglect"
No, because the incident took place outside the jurisdiction of the UK Courts.
And if there was anything in Portuguese law for which they could have been prosecuted, you can be sure they would have been, because the Portuguese authorities tried so hard to nail them for anything they could come up with.

I'm sure Kate will never give up looking for Maddy, nor will her father and that is only right. I know if that happened to one of my children, I would not ever be able to stop looking. I do think though that the only thing the government can and should do is to approach various foreign police forces / governments regarding all of the British children, who have gone missing in these countries. This is not just Maddy we are talking about here ... there are so many more and if the government is to get involved then it should be for all of these children, not just for the child who has parents who are capable and able to cope with being so public about their case! Not everyone is able to do this, or has the money or the support the McCanns have had!
Actually I believe there was a case where some mother allowed her 15 year old daughter to marry some Turkish lad in Turkey and WAs prosecuted when she returned to the UK- so not sure that's entirely true JJ- and to be honest, can anyone not say with hand on heart that they behaved irresponsibly and neglectfully?

Foriegn police forces all have one modus operandi ...
(1) Arrest the nearest innocent foreigner(s).
(2) Tell the Press you have successfully apprehended the criminal.
(3) Allow the actual criminal to get away, while you are wasting time interviewing the innocent foreigner(s).
(4) Spend the next few years trying to collect "facts" which seem to support your incompetence, while ignoring any real evidence.
(5) Take great exception when any other foreigner points out that you are, in fact, totally incompetent (or, more probably, simply corrupt).
