So , Kate McCann ( on publication of her book ) is calling upon David Cameron , for the government to '' take some responsibility '' in finding their missing daughter .

Is her choice of words reasonable , in the circumstances ?

Part of the reason for the trail going cold was that the Portuguese police were busy looking into the question of the McCanns being suspects, during the vital few days when Maddy was being spirited away.

Since then, the Portuguese police have been so busy covering their own backs after their monumental balls up, they haven't co-operated with any constructive investigations.

But then ... everyone knows my view of foreign police forces.
It depends on the circumstances under which she is being asked the questions. The Portuguese authorities, when questioning the McCanns, were trying to pin the murder of their child on them, I'm pretty sure I would only be willing to answer questions that were conducive to actually finding my missing child.

Why are people so quick to judge without being in possession of all the facts?
Because they are middle-class doctors.........

"would have been prosecuted for child neglect"

No, because the incident took place outside the jurisdiction of the UK Courts.

And if there was anything in Portuguese law for which they could have been prosecuted, you can be sure they would have been, because the Portuguese authorities tried so hard to nail them for anything they could come up with.
I think you've hit the nail on the head there, JTH.
I'm sure Kate will never give up looking for Maddy, nor will her father and that is only right. I know if that happened to one of my children, I would not ever be able to stop looking. I do think though that the only thing the government can and should do is to approach various foreign police forces / governments regarding all of the British children, who have gone missing in these countries. This is not just Maddy we are talking about here ... there are so many more and if the government is to get involved then it should be for all of these children, not just for the child who has parents who are capable and able to cope with being so public about their case! Not everyone is able to do this, or has the money or the support the McCanns have had!
Actually I believe there was a case where some mother allowed her 15 year old daughter to marry some Turkish lad in Turkey and WAs prosecuted when she returned to the UK- so not sure that's entirely true JJ- and to be honest, can anyone not say with hand on heart that they behaved irresponsibly and neglectfully?
BUT she isn't 'a missing child *in* this country'!
she is/was *from* this country!
i applaud kate's resiliance but the phrase 'some responsibility' should start at home don't you think? xx
I'm sure I have, NoM, and it makes me furious.

All the mealy-mouthed dressing-up in the world won't disguise that 'some' people have a huge chippy-chip on their shoulder about the McCanns and their perceived middle-class advantages and *that* is what they despise.
| despise the fact that they have always stopped other presentations that do not go along with their version. Yes I am refering to The truth of the Lie so feel free to *** off a book that the family were so desparate to stop us from reading.
Because it has precious little basis in unchallengeable fact, mickrog.......

carakeel makes a good point.

Maybe the Govt should ask the Portuguese authorities to review the cases of ALL missing persons from the UK.

I wonder how many there are.
and their story does????????????
Number of British people who "disappear" each year ... 275,000 (yes, really!)

Number who are subsequently found ... most of them.

BUT ...

Number of Brits who have still been missing for more than one year ... 16,000

(ie, Maddy McCann + 15,999 others)
Goncalo Amaral was the ineffectual lead investigator in the hunt.

His book is partial, self-serving, subjective and hints at things which have NO basis in fact.

He has come out of the whole affair discredited by anyone with a modicum of sense.
sorry i will join him as another person with no sense cus i wont accept that the couples story is totally true......i bow to a greater mind......
Foriegn police forces all have one modus operandi ...

(1) Arrest the nearest innocent foreigner(s).

(2) Tell the Press you have successfully apprehended the criminal.

(3) Allow the actual criminal to get away, while you are wasting time interviewing the innocent foreigner(s).

(4) Spend the next few years trying to collect "facts" which seem to support your incompetence, while ignoring any real evidence.

(5) Take great exception when any other foreigner points out that you are, in fact, totally incompetent (or, more probably, simply corrupt).
