The Mail was careful to state:

/// They are convinced that the wraiths of both Wing Commander Guy Gibson and his chocolate–coloured Labrador haunt the remote airfield from which the audacious raid was launched. ///

His 'chocolate-coloured' Labrador????? It was Black.

But later they threw all caution to the wind and went on to report:

/// Gibson's Labrador, ***, was the mascot for the squadron that launched an audacious night-time raid on three heavily defended dams deep in Germany's industrial heartland using bouncing bombs ///

/// The Labrador's name was used as a code word whenever one of Germany's Ruhr Dams was breached during the mission.///

Oh dear should they have stated that fact?

But apparently in the remake of the film the dog is to be re-named 'Digger'

Must admit I didn't know it was Australian though.

I have watched many films where the substance has been altered to 'dramatise' events and winced and gnashed my teeth in equal measure...

I have decided, however, not to bat an eyelid over the name-change of a pesky dog in this new version of the Dambusters.

Had they cast Tom Cruise as the leader of a fearless band of USAF pilots and the film was set in their Louisiana airfield in the run up to the complete destruction of the dams using the bombs designed by Al Pacino (complete with Noo Yoik accent) then, I might, just might, have been bothered....
Dr Filth, you cannot seriously be trying to draw parallels between these two instances of film versus fact - they simply do not compare in any way.

To use your comparison, a film about the Holocaust should show Hitler playing with his dogs to prove what a nice man he was really.

You appear to be looking for conspiracy theories where none even begin to exist.
"one film had an armoured car drive onto the football pitch and start firing at the crowd"

isn't that pretty much hat you said in the long bit ?
let them change what they want we can have a whole new generation see the world in a different light

U-571 is a 2000 film directed by Jonathan Mostow, and starring Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Thomas Kretschmann, Jon Bon Jovi, Jack Noseworthy, Will Estes, and Tom Guiry. In the film, a World War II German submarine is boarded in 1942 by disguised United States Navy submariners, seeking to capture her Enigma cipher machine.

The film was financially successful and generally well received by critics in the USA and won an Academy Award.

The real U-571 was never involved in any such events, was not captured, and was in fact sunk in January 1944, off Ireland, by a Short Sunderland flying boat from No. 461 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. The real U-570 was captured almost intact by the Royal Navy in 1941, although not before her crew had destroyed almost all the secret materials on board.

U-571 was filmed in the Mediterranean Sea, near Rome and Malta
Dr F - AOG invited us to get exercised by the fact of the n*****/digger name change.

If you wish us to become equally exercised about the Brit-bashing, or appropriating of British 'victories' by Hollywood......put up a thread in the film section.

well it had to be on account of expenses and location licences.
but it was a true story.
the Guardian website runs a regular feature ("Reel history") about how accurate historical films are. Apparently Anonymous fails big time.

http://www.guardian.c...og+series/reelhistory

But changing the name of a dog doesn't seem to rank very high in the list of historical outrages.
remakes are usually not as good as the original film and if this dogs name is so bad why make the film

are the scriptwriters film makers that stuck for new ideas
Jackson's version of Lord of the Rings was better than the previous one. His King Kong was better in bits than the first one, much better than the second. So he's got good form.
The film is a remake for modern audiences, using modern technology.
The dog is not a pivotal character in the story of the raids, but does feature in the greater 'story' of the men of the operation.
i am surprised you don't want them to have a meerkat as their mascot seeing as it is for the modern audience
I think you need to step away from this thread, Dr F.

Your responses are becoming exceedingly strange.........
Dr Filth - are you just chucking in wild comparions as they come into your mind? Are you aware that as well as thinking these 'out there' thoughts you are alos comunicating them on this website?

Just checking ...
one minute andy let just answer jack

>> need to step away <<

step away, i am just thinking of a new modern name for the dog a more up to date name could be
lourdes
harper
banjo
caleb
andy >> Dr Filth, you cannot seriously be trying to draw parallels between these two instances of film versus fact - they simply do not compare in any way. <<

the fact is the two fllms show untruths

code machine captured by english not americans
the machine gun firing armoured never happened
the dogs name was not digger

these are facts twist it anyway you like but it is the truth
Stick a pin in your monitor screen and choose one...........:o/

The fact remains that altering a dog's name (a dog!!!) is no great issue and whichever of the names you offer you feel would be more suitable, the fact would remain that the dog's name has been changed. It doesn't matter what it has been changed *to*, it matters what it has been changed *from*. It would have caused more heat and light, had it remained, and skewed the focus of the film away from the exploits of derring-do...
thank you jack your words not mine i rest my case

>> The fact remains that altering a dog's name (a dog!!!) is no great issue <<

if this is true let us keep the original dog's name
If altering it is no big issue, but would make more comfortable viewing for a modern audience, why not change it ?

Touche...
hope you never listen to any modern rap songs jack
