trt I read the links, that's why I asked! There was plain inference to be drawn that the complaint was not mere numbers but of the effect on the existing communities of, for example, large numbers of Muslims in one area. That might be a cultural concern.

My husband always liked to pretend he was a Celt - pure imagination. With the amount of immigrants that have always come to this country there is no way anyone could possibly be of pure blood. We are a great big melting pot and some day, far in the future we will have absorbed all the ones that are coming in now just as we have done in the past. Polyglot is a good word for us, although it actually refers to languages it seems to fit to me.

somewhere last year I read an editorial from a paper - it may well have been the Express - complaining about the flood of immigrants, the way they kept to themselves, failed to adopt British ways, couldn't speak English, lived in squalor and put Brits out of jobs by working for a pittance.

Only unusual thing was it was 100 years old and instead of saying Muslims, it said Jews. Everything else was exactly as it would be in today's Express.
