Should Jack Russels Be Included As Dangerous Dogs
26 Answers
Whenever there is a tragedy involving dogs the usual crowd start baying for the heads of the Mastiffs and Ronnies etc.
Now a poor little tot has been killed by a Jack Russel.
So, should they now be banned?

Jack Russells are a 'busy' self confident breed but not any more or less dangerous I think than many others, but I wouldn't trust any dog with a new baby or very small child alone. We have always had dogs ever since I can remembe but you can never predict 100% what they will do, so you need to take extra care around something as defenceless as a new baby.
I have very strong views on this subject. Dogs are animals, not humans, and people who do not realise they are animals with their own hierarchy and way of doing things, who treat them as their 'babies', laugh when the dog licks their newborn baby all over or barks at it (oh look its jealous how cute) are setting themselves up for accidents. The answer to your question is no, as all dogs have the potential to bite, maim and even kill but some dog owners will continue to treat their pets like human children and not understand how to train and communicate with them as dogs.
Even though I said no, I do have personal experience of a JRT attacking a child.
My previous JRT bit Mini Boo when she was 2. Bit her cheek, her nose an knocked out a tooth. I was out of the room and can only assume she jumped on him as he was asleep on the sofa and scared him, which prompted him to lunge.
He was however ,very very jealous of her, never took to her and even growled at her the day we brought her home as a newborn from hospital. He was I admit, my "baby" before she came along and though I tried to maintain that with him, he obviously realised his time as top dog was over and resented it.
I blame myself for what happened the warning signs were always there, but I stupidly ignored them.
It was with real sadness that I had to re-home him with a (childless!) friend of my stepfather's.

We have 2 large, potentially dangerous Dogs (avatar x 2) they would never be left alone with small children, or for that matter adults that we thought did not understand Dogs, as that would be irresponsible of us as owners. we have never had a problem with them because we are aware of potential problems and pre-empt them, it's called responsible ownership.
