Blair should be dropped out of the back of a Hercules at 35000 feet over Iraq, then that would be a proper state funeral worthy of the man who attempted to destroy Britain
Even the £3.6 million may be on the high side since it includes £2 million 'opportunity cost' of police pay for policemen who were due to work that shift anyway.

I don't know what's planned for Blair, Gromit. Maybe nothing since Thatcher was Britain's longest serving PM- she served longer than Blair.
Anyway the funeral plans for Thatcher were agreed around 5 years ago by the previous Labour government so maybe questions about the cost should be directed at Labour.

I think Cameron missed a trick here though- he could have announced that whilst he was going to go along broadly with the plans approved by the Labour previous (Labour) government he recognised that times were hard and he was going to cap the cost at maybe 5p ahead or set up a fund for donations so it cost the public purse nothing. Maybe a temporary tax on beer and champagne (as consumed at some 'witch is dead' parties) would have raised some money too.
5p a head = approx £3 million doesn't hit.....
It's not important now, it's done, as long as a precedent isn't set to plant any more in a semi state way I'm not bothered, although I was against the idea of a such a grand funeral for someone so divisive as her in the place.
*first place* DUH!
It was worth every damn penny just to see the looks of utter indignation and pathetic outbursts from all the leties who she thoroughly defeated.

I'd be more worried about the money we throw away every day to the eussr and foreign aid, not to mention all the money wasted every day for non jobs created by government depts, and town halls up and down the country.
Hi Baz- can you give us a couple of examples of non-jobs in local government?
lmao- oh you do cheer me up Bazwillrun- bless you. xx
@factor
get yourself a copy of the gaurdian jobs supplement, pages of them and most local rags also have a section devoted to the same non jobs for good little pc lefties

@shennaningan

dont be so patronising....youre not good at it
Its not my fault that people like you hate the truth when it smacks them well and truly between the eyes

you lot carry on wasting your time on here all day....(as usual), I have far more productive things to do rain or no rain.

you dont work in government non-jobs by any chance do you, that might explain all the free time you seem to have during the day
Lol Baz....she's 15.
If extra security hadn’t been necessary to control threatened disruption by pointless protests, it might have worked out a bit cheaper.
I sometimes look in the Guardian, baz, but I'm still not sure what you mean by 'non-jobs'.
Can you point me to a couple of specific examples, please
Well if you will post hilarious remarks like ' EUSSR' you can scarcely expect anyone to take you seriously Bazwillrun. It was a foaming at the mouth spewing of right wing rhetoric and I found it pretty damned funny. Be less stereotypical next time and I might bother not to answer so facetiously next time.
There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth from certain quarters when the cost prior to the event was quoted at £4 million.

It comes in under budget and it's STILL being made an issue.

Give it a rest, it's tiresome......
Agree with chill, this is getting tedious now - so what, I'm glad she had a good send-off.
The damage was done years ago. I ought to be getting worked up about the money spent on this divisive and seriously flawed politician's send-off but somehow I just can't
@sharingan - there is a fine line between patronising sarcasm and cocky little sh*t -try and stay within the parameters of the former rather than sinking into the latter ;-)
Here we go again...
Given that we're suffering from high unemployment, it might even be a good thing that there are so many "non-jobs"...

Not that there are. The problem when government is trying to make cuts back to the state is that no-one who is doing the cuts actually knows what are the "non-jobs".

As regards Maggie's funeral. Well, it's hardly a ridiculous amount of money.
@sharingan - no here we don't go again.....just be careful how you come over thats all -bit of friendly advice nothing more - hence the smiley face. ;-)
