Octavius. There is always going to be a problem reaching people who refuse to engage.
For instance, 2 years ago, I worked on the Census. There was a massive amount of pre-publicity about the Census in the weeks leading up to its start in May 2011.....huge advertising hoardings, adverts on the TV, radio and in the newspapers. The Census packs that arrived through every letter box in the land couldn't have been more eye catching. And yet everybody on my Team were amazed that such a lot of people looked at you blankly when you called at the door to offer help to complete their forms. They had never heard of the Census apparently. Most of them at least were uneducated and stupid but not all.
The publicity surrounding all these recent court cases has been very pervasive and you would have thought that almost everyone was aware of the basic details at least. But no....I met someone only yesterday that didn't know either that Jimmy Saville was dead or that he was a serious sexual offender !
So, Churches, Mosques, etc are a start. But this can't be a one-off...the campaign has to be on-going throughout society.
Child sexual abuse has been a growing concern for a number of years now. The internet must take it share of the blame I suspect. But we mustn't think that it is confined to one community in Britain. I have said on here before that Saville, Hall, Glitter, etc were conspicuously white. In fact even Savilles hair was white. Parents need to be aware of what their kids are getting up too, especially when they are on-line. They need to make sure that the younger ones are not hanging around unsavoury places late at night. Social Services need to pull their fingers out and make sure that when kids are in care, it means exactly that....CARE.
