Those who cry 'unduly lenient' are perhaps looking at this too narrow. DLT has a conviction against his name, has suffered the long anguish of two trials which has obviously taken its toll on his health. His reputation has been tarnished, his finances have taken a battering, sold his home to finance his costs etc. Put the sum total together of his 'punishment'...

naomi - "Well, she has the justice she wanted – just let’s hope the life sentence he and his family have received sits comfortably with her. I wouldn’t want her mentality."

I have been accused of adopting a 'sackcloth and ashes' approach to the victim in this case - I feel that charge could equally be labelled at the criminal.

Most criminals' relatives are innocent of the crimes conducted by their family member - the responsibility for the fact that they become unwillingly involved lies fairly and squarely with the convicted criminal - as is the case here.

I don;t imagine that the distress caused to Mr Travis's family sits well with her at all - anymore than the distress caused to herself and her family in bringing the case sat well with her either.

She was assaulted, has sought redress, and obtained it by the law of the land.

I am sure she will sleep well eventually.

I would have her mentality any day - she has shown remarkable courage in the case of difficult circumstances, including, but limited to, additional insults and character slurs by her accuser.

I hope she serves as an example to all other assaulted women - that they have a voice, and justice can be obtained.
It's really not helpful to victims of sexual assaults by anyone to hear other women in particular labelling known victims of sexual assaults as 'spiteful' or of questionable morals. Since when was it EVER appropriate for victims to be vilified in this manner? It's really disgraceful that anyone thinks that's okay and totally counter productive in the efforts society is making to remedy the trauma victims have felt and to discourage people from thinking they can treat women in any way they please. This sort of nonsense sends sexual equality back fifty years.
Andy, in the absence of evidence of how she thinks and how she feels, you imagine and assume rather a lot on her behalf. She is a grown woman and in my opinion to harbour something that she swept off as a joke at the time for twenty years before approaching the police tells me that this case has been blown out of all proportion. I repeat - I wouldn’t want her mentality. We’re going around in circles now. Perhaps it's time to call a halt to these proceedings.
Who questioned her morals? I must have missed that.
You did Naomi, you have made it abundantly clear that you think she is immoral in 'putting Travis' through this 'ordeal'. If that is not questioning her moral judgement I'm not sure what is.
I said nothing of the kind. I said that bringing an action like this after twenty years knowing that it will ruin a man is, in my opinion, spiteful. Get it right.
She didn't "sweep it off as a joke at the time", she used humour to help her cope.

Get it right!
I see no evidence of spite in the link provided by Sipowicz......
I did get it right. She used humour.
A subtle difference that you obviously can't see!
Maybe that's why this thread rumbles on.
You're not on your own here, Naomi. But if some people are 'fixed' in their view, no amount of common sense and/or reason will sway them.
Svejk, clearly. :o)
"Andy, in the absence of evidence of how she thinks and how she feels".
The evidence is in the link I gave earlier!
andy-hughes wrote this. //I don;t imagine that the distress caused to Mr Travis's family sits well with her at all//

I see nothing in your link to suggest that the distress caused to his family concerns her.
It is a "victim impact statement", she is the "victim".
Why on earth should she concern herself with DLT's family?!?

Few people would embark on any sort of litigation if they were to start fretting about the impact it would have on third parties of the 'accused'...

I applaud her decision to stand up for herself and on behalf of others.
Perhaps DLT's family should sue him for the distress he has caused them?
So in your world Naomi someone morally correct can be spiteful? Really?
If so I'll rephrase my original statement which now reads like this and really doesn't change my opinion or the flavour of my original remark, it simply negates you the opportunity to hide behind very precise definitions of words I may have chosen to originally use.

//It's really not helpful to victims of sexual assaults by anyone to hear other women in particular labelling known victims of sexual assaults as 'spiteful'. Since when was it EVER appropriate for victims to be vilified in this manner? It's really disgraceful that anyone thinks that's okay and totally counter productive in the efforts society is making to remedy the trauma victims have felt and to discourage people from thinking they can treat women in any way they please. Sipowicz, I know - just pointing out that the evidence that andy was talking about isn’t there, as you claimed.

Jack, //Why on earth should she concern herself with DLT's family?!?//

In a case like this, I would think very differently to you.
kvalidir I don’t hide behind anything. Your fingers ran ahead of your thought processes.
