That I understand but I have spent hours on beaches, smoke from others does not ever reach me. It's just pandering because it's THE topic to have a go at.

In an enclosed space like a pub fine...on a beach,,,paah, pure pc pandering...i have never ever been bothered by smoke whislt on a beach or anywhere else out doors for that matter.....

yet more crasss garbage from the petty little bureaucrats that work in our townhalls....pity they dont work on the the big problems with so much zeal
East Europeans probably smoke and drink more than us!!
"you may not like it but smoking is perfectly legal" but it need not be. Laws can be made or repealed at any time.

I suspect that the issue is as much as umpteen butts left in each square foot of sand as it is to do with the smoke.

Anyway it is simple to enforce. Great burly body builders will come around and if they see you smoking insist, "On your heads", as they demonstrate a different orifice one could put the cigarette or cigar into.
bazwillrun - do you take your cigarette butts home or do you leave them on the beach to harm marine life? Maybe you bury them in the sand without a thought that when the tide comes in, they will be in the sea.
## I can sometimes smell cigarette smoke coming from an overtaking car on the motorway even when both our vehicles have the windows closed. ##

NO WAY Khandro, I think that's your imagination running away with you,
can you smell if someone farts as well, as they pass?
"....and there is nothing worse than having a nice pitch on the beach..."

Nothing? Really? Think about the news from the last few days and recalibrate your worse-ometer.
Think this will be a very difficult one to enforce, but I agree with what they are trying to do. I know, as an ex smoker, I'm a bit of a pain but really can't stand the smell of smoke.
Why would I say I can smell cigarette smoke when I can't? Unless a car has it's ventilation system on 'recycle' it takes in air and expels air, and just like you can smell the diesel fumes, your car is taking in some the air from the car(s) in front, and as I said, if I'm overtaken and the car moves in front of me, I can clearly smell cigarette smoke if it's being emitted. Why do you wish to challenge that?

@237SJ

I dont smoke so your questions are irelevant....
most people breathe in daily more c r a p walking down the road and in their cars from traffic fumes than they ever do from ciggies, so this beach ban is just more petty control from petty little people
Its not petty control form petty little people. Smokers choose to pollute their lungs and potentially die from lung cancer -let them do it but not in public -that is the petty little public that chooses not to kill themselves with nicotine tar in their lungs or become a burden on the NHS with cigarette related illness. . Try eating a lovely lunch on a terrace on a sunny day in a restaurant and have puff the effing magic dragon and his wife lighting up next to you. Smoking should be banned everywhere in public places .

"Try eating a lovely lunch on a terrace on a sunny day in a restaurant and have puff the effing magic dragon and his wife lighting up next to you"

always looking for something to be offended by...i cant remember the last time i ever smelt smoke to the degree it even merited wasting time thinking about it, yet with people like you it seems to be a regular occurrence...amazing how that happens isnt it !
You seem to be the one looking for something to be offended by -read your recent posts, a pure rant fest lol! I have the right to fresh air on the beach or eat my meal without having to breathe in someone else's second hand smoke. Maybe you have sinus or sense of smell issues and can't smell smoke like other people can.
It is possible to smell cigarette smoke on the motorway, though. I have noticed it but it has been when the driver ahead has thrown their cigarette butt out of the window and it has lodged in my car`s grill. That has happened to me quite a few times over the years.
I do agree with banning it in restaurants and pubs etc and am very aware of the unpleasant smell however in open spaces such as parks and beaches the smoke dissipates almost immediately. As for leaving butts on beaches, I never do that and it should be fined heavily- alongside all the others who leave their lolly sticks, plastic and paper rubbish on the sand.
Went on holiday with a friend a couple of years ago to Spain. Although the hotel rooms were non-smoking, we had a balcony and said friend smoked there daily. She was/is a very heavy smoker (40 a day) and it really spoiled my holiday. Despite being outdoors and changing where I sat, I always seemed to have smoke blowing my way. Although we are still good friends I vowed I would never go on holiday with her again - and I haven't.
May not be a problem by 2020 when the price of fags has gone up 50%!!
same as they enforce the smoking laws elsewhere.
I smoked heavily for many years. I was drummed out the Wolf Cubs for smoking in St Mary's Hendon Churchyard in 1959ish.Caught by Baloo after a meeting.
I gave up several years ago because I had to. Major Surgery for a Aortic By-pass and Bi femoral graft. I missed by tobacco so much I vowed to start after the op if I survived. I realised after that as age catches up there is a good likelihood of more natural age related health problems and I might need to give up again .
Sure enough cancer was diagnosed last year so I was relieved of the difficulty of stopping the weed again. My premonition paid off.
I really, really miss tobacco still and stupid as it seems I wish I could return. The power of drugs !!!!
As a smoker I never realised the discomfort I caused to other non smokers around me. Why not? My sense of smell and taste was tainted. No problem to me at the time.
I have just left my local with my wife who joined me after work.I was sitting in my favourite seat and table. Yes old codgers do that in pubs they frequent.
Lovely hot summers day . Both double doors were open as well as two large windows facing the pavement and street(A24 and a bus route.)
My favoured seat is halfway back in a pub that is about 80yds deep. All the patrons who smoked were outside and you could see and smell all the smoke wafting back to me and my wife. They might as well sat round the table with us.
I do not hate smokers.I don't judge them for the habit I still crave but I do smell the awful tobacco they share with us although they may not appreciate the discomfort they create as I never did.
