How can this possibly be balanced when it is only two religions who get the privilege of being placed in a separate category of hate crime?

The Law in the UK should be for everyone regardless of their religion, If the persons can not abide by the Law of the land, that's their problem.

Don't they realise they engender hate by making muslims a special case and cosset them? It should be a like it or lump it scenario.

I watched 'Is England Racist' and yes, it is. I think it's anti-Muslim offences that are rising much quicker.

That being said, and although it's not fair, crimes like the beheading of Lee Rigby and the recent foiled plan to do another beheading in the same fashion...is why people fear the religion..

The open racism on the street came from whites to Muslims and Muslims to Jews.

Why should it be balanced?

If there is a sharp rise in antisemetic and anti-Muslim hate crimes, does it not make sense to separate those out in the figures?

Is there a correlated sharp rise in attacks on Christians which would show we need to record these separately?

I would suggest that these to religions are offered specialist analysis because they are the two religions that suffer the highest incidences of hate crimes.

Just because the crime is inflicted upon a certain group or groups, does not make them any more serious.

When certain groups decide to target minorities, it can lead to feelings of isolation and fear. We all know how miserable it can be for certain groups when others make them feel that they are 'available for attack'.

As a society, we are (rightly) repulsed kind of cowards who seek out other groups for abuse.

If these morons want to enjoy targeting certain demographics, then it's only fair that we can enjoy them having a 20% increase in their jail term, surely?

As the Muslim presenter said on the programme she's been racially abused, she knows lots of others that have been racially abused. The people who took part in the programme have been racially abused. None of them reported it. So we can assume that lots goes on unreported.

retrocop - interesting that you quote Shylock from the Merchant of Venice - a play which is acknowledged as playing up to the anti-Semitic feelings in Elizabethan England - perhaps not an ideal example!

This has nothing to do with the law.

The Equalities Act is just that...if a Christian is abused because of his or her religion in the street, or refused a job - the Act covers them in the same way it would a Jew or black person, or disabled person or a woman.

People are getting confused as to what is being discussed here. The law is the same, but police are being encouraged to record antisemetic and anti-Islamic hate crimes separately because empiritical evidence shows that they are rising quicker than other hate crimes.

It's important to record these to determine whether this is true.

In fact, I'm surprised that religious/race/sexuality based hate crimes are not already categorised thus.
