Incidentally, if suicide is forbidden in Islam (anyone know?) or killing unarmed civilians fails to count as "death in battle" then some major trickery would have been needed by their organisers. Or ignorance if their own religion. Or they were just dim.

I'm not wanting to argue with this point exactly, but what sort of message is it we're sending out to the rest of the Muslim community if we're saying "hey, you aren't following your faith at all properly, only those terrorists have got it right"? We can't stop people being Muslim, but we can certainly try to encourage a moderate interpretation of the religion (although, as with other religions, this is a change to come from within). Except many people aren't doing that, instead confidently asserting that the only true Muslims are the terrorist ones.

I don't particularly care how much truth there is to this, or not -- it's enough that this is exactly the last message we should be spreading.

Muslims might not listen much to what non-Muslims say -- except that, if they listen to a radical preacher about how the West hates them and must be destroyed, and then hear Westerners repeating this message, it's bound to have some reinforcement, no? And if nothing else, it serves to stir up anti-Islamic sentiments among the non-Muslim world.

It is, put more simply, a highly divisive message to spread to suggest that the ISIS interpretation of Islam is the correct one. I can't see how it does anyone any favours to say this.

Jim, Muslims don’t need me to tell them what their literature contains. They don't all follow it to the letter as IS does - but they know - and nothing you, I, or anyone else says will influence them in any way, shape, or form. I actually think it's rather patronising to assume it might.
