ISIS is seeking to create a war between all Muslims and all non-Muslims. The last thing we should do is to further that case by portraying all Muslims as being a couple of hours of reading away from seeing the "truth" in ISIS' message.

Jim, //I think it's patronising to assume the reverse, ie that all Muslims are completely unaffected by the world around them //
I didn't say that.

I didn't say that either.

//Suicide is forbidden – but martyrdom is rewarded. //
Well, that confounds my attempt at discouraging their efforts.
Thinking back some years, it was the likes of Palestinian matriarchs who were keen on the word martyr. They were the ones persuading their own sons to do it. Presumably for warped reasons like having bragging rights ever afterwards.
Christian martyrs typically underwent hideous and protracted torture. Whether Islam held to that standard I'll never know but I can be certain it was all codified before concepts like explosions could have been wrapped up in the definition of the word. The fact that they do so now shows how they are willing to flex word meanings and bring things up to date… when it suits their aims.
(I need to feed that back to the "Can Islam be reformed?" thread).

Digs??? are they not just justifiable different opinions?
/// Why don't you (and you know full well who you are) try and stick to answering the topic? By all means challenge andy, but on what he says and NOT how he says it or the length of his answers or his perceived special treatment and abuse of his powers because he's a Moderator. ///
Here endeth the sermon.

I have waited until I could watch Livingstone's actual performance on Question Time before commenting. Which was just as well because the Mail report totally misrepresented him.
He said that Saddam Hussain was never a threat to this country and he didn't vote for the Iraq war. He said that the Security Services had warned Blair that action in Iraq would make us a target. And that the 7/7 bombers cited Iraq as their reason for the attacks. - I cannot disagree with any of that.
He also said he supported a UN backed Coalition against ISIS. He said boots on the ground will beat ISIS not airstrikes, and he supported that. So the friend of terrorists accusation is complete nonsense.
