Yes Peter...
//A Tesco spokesperson said, "All our store colleagues are trained in the responsible selling of alcohol, but we recognise an error has been made in this instance. We're pleased Ms Wain has accepted our apology and will continue to shop with us."//

We're damned when we do and damned when we don't.
Personally I believe the till operator was wrong (if the sketchy details in the article is to be believed) however sometimes it's very tricky line when selling age related products. We make mistakes, we're not infallible but the dire threats and warnings us till operators are given regarding booze, fags etc is enough to give anyone the wobbles when it comes to selling them.

A store assistant is obliged to refuse to sell alcohol to someone who appears to be drunk. There is a high corelation between alcohol misuse and self harming in teenagers. As we only have Becci's word on the incident, perhaps she omitted that she had already had a drink when she tried to make her purchase.
// According to the NHS in Scotland, more than half of people who ended up in hospital because they’d deliberately injured themselves said they’ve drunk alcohol immediately before or while doing it. //

Even if the checkout assistant had made an error, there is a way to handle the situation and from the story.
I will assume the truth of what occurred, acknowledging we are only hearing one side of the story - but there was a way to deal with this so that the shopper wasn't embarrassed. A discreet conversation with supervisor would have been the sensitive way to handle this.
And the checkout assistant said it was Tesco policy, when it clearly isn't.
