How did the till assistant recognise that they were self armed scars, if I saw a person with scars on their arms or anywhere else for that matter I would not immediately assume that they were caused in the process of self harming.
Regarding Gromit's stupid cow comment, I was once openly chastised on here, for using the word *** to describe a female wrongdoer.

Well two at least that actually show the scars.
But I would still not put my job on the line, by automatically assuming that they were self inflicted scars, could had, had an accident, could be burn marks etc.
Called me naive, but the fact is because I have never come in contact with anyone who has self harmed, it would never have entered my head, that is what the scars were.

Looking at the photos at the Daily Mail website, I would have immediately recognised those marks as scars from self-harm. However, I don't know enough about the condition to base any judgement on my actions (if I were in the checkout assistant's position).
However, saying that - if the girl was buying razor blades, or a knife, I would have to let common sense prevail and call my supervisor.
However, she was buying champagne and a birthday card. To me, that doesn't suggest someone who's going to go home and attack herself, it suggests someone planning a party.
