I think any of the regular AB'ers who have debated this case as it has developed were probably prepared for this debate but even so -
I remain amazed at the number of people willing to line up and defend Johnson, either by painting him as the victim of some femme fatale, or by comparing his offence with other non-related offences, or go on about non-famous underage sex cases, or consent levels in other countries.
We get nowhere by saying 'he was famous so ...' , or 'in other countries it would be OK so ...', or as is the most odious position 'she was asking for it so ...'.
The simple fact is - this was an offence carried out in the UK by an adult male against a child. He has been caught, prosecuted, and sentenced, and that, barring a successful appeal, is the end of the matter.
I notice a distinct absence of compassion for the girl caught up in all this, or this idiot's innocent daughter who is now deprived of her daddy because he was unable to act like a mature adult.
But human nature is here, as anywhere, and people will want to defend Johnson, and castigate the teenager involved.
I am pleased he has been jailed, but I wonder how much this will ever do to address the behaviour of dense morally redundant millionaire sportsmen who act as though the female of the species is there only for their enjoyment.
