Although that said, funnily enough one week ago I had a chance to speak with someone from Turkey, on a night out -- they spent a lot of it ranting about how broken Turkey was lately.

Jim - Erdogan is definitely not trustworthy and has been destroying Turkey's
moderate and 'bridging' status. He wants Turkey to become an out and out Islamic state - and yet to join Europe?

Yeah, she was ranting about Erdogan. To be honest, what was going on in Turkey before I was only vaguely aware of.

My next-door-neighbours and their tiny children are in Turkey on holiday at the moment - her parents have a house there. I would worry more if he were not a very resourceful policeman - but still I'm a bit anxious.

In May Erdogan removed the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. It was he who negotiated with Merkel to stem the migrant crisis and excelerating assession talks. His removal and Erdogan's anti EU rhetoric was seen as a set back.
It now appears that the military coup lleaders are supporters of Davutoglu.

the military have always seen themselves as the guarantors of a secular state, which means they've occasional revolted when they thought the country was becoming too Islamic. Would this make them better or worse EU members? Who can say?

ther BBC likes to get its facts right, and many ABers demand the same levels of perfection from them. However, they are leading with Turkey.

I am still yet to fathom why anyone holidays in a Muslim country, even more so in light of recent events.
Yes, there have been attacks in France, Spain etc in recent years but I do like to minimise the odds, not holidaying in a Muslim country reducing them further IMHO.

Chill. I've been to Turkey for the last 3 years. Not one sign of anything other than a beautiful country with very friendly people. I've had several wet shaves by a Muslim with a cut throat razor. It's a typical example of the over exaggeration of situations by the press. If the FO advise me not to go, then that's when I'll cancel my plans.
