Certainly sounds like it, despite denials...

Yeah, a bit puzzling that.

According to the BBC, nearly 3000 soldiers and 2,700 Judges have been arrested. I can understand the soldiers but that many Judges ?

Rest assured the rest of judges will be very busy passing some very worrying legislation.
Erdo will makes sure there won't ever be another coup attempt.

Gromit
Talbot,
I predicted a coup, sooner rather than later. The fact that the last line was wrong because the coup failed does not make the prediction 100% fulfilled. But I was spot on with most of it.

Why on earth are you telling me that?
Talbot...perhaps the opposition should try a more democratic way of changing the Government next time.
Another random statement but yes of course they should.
Apologies Talbot, should have been to Douglas.
// perhaps the opposition should try a more democratic way of changing the Government next time. //

Erdogan is not the most democratic of Presidents. He jails oppostion leaders, he closes down newspapers, and tv channels, he sacks Judges, jails military officers. He is corrupt and indulges in nepotism. But the economy is doing well, so people keep voting for him.
Seems to me that many over here are disappointed now as things did not go the way they expected.
They said on the news Turkey abolished the death penalty - I wonder what the new judges are doing......
Heard it suggested on the radio that it isn't beyond belief that Erdogan could have had a hand in it, in order to crush the revolt, solidify his position and push ahead with further reforms. Not that, that could possibly be true though, no one would be that sly.
Turkey like most European countries is a member of the Council of Europe, which forbids members to use the death penalty though AIUI it does not insist that members remove it from statute
Thank God Erdogan is still in power. If he was removed we would be in the situation that we had with Libya, Syria and Iraq. You need a hard line dictator to keep the factions from rising up. Like it or not, that is the case in that part of the world.

Yeah, thank Alla.
Erdogan is failing hugely in the war against terror. Five major insidents in the last 6 months. It couldn't really be any worse.
Nice one Gromit. It's happened every ten years or so since the 1960s, the last time in 1997.
Nostradamus you ain't.
ichkeria, // Turkey like most European countries is a member of the Council of Europe, which forbids members to use the death penalty//

“There is speculation the death penalty could be reintroduced by a president whose authority now appears to have been bolstered by Friday's military challenge.”

Nothing would surprise me.
Not having the death penalty doesn't stop political killings of course. You've only got to look at Russia to see that. But they could not officially use it and remain in the Council of Europe and its associated bodies.

Yeah, thank god ... all plain sailing from now on.
Douglas,
// It's happened [coup]every ten years or so //

The last one was in 1997, and that was a bloodless affair where the military sent out a memorandum to the coalition telling them they were sacked. The last proper one was in 1980.

The fact that I follow Turkey and spotted the situation was ripe for a coup, is not having prophetic powers. It was pretty obvious, but I put it in pixels a month before the event.
Gromit
The fact that I follow Turkey and spotted the situation was ripe for a coup,

Be honest Gromit, you spotted articles that suggested a coup was on the cards?
If no one else had suggested it then fair play but many had suggested it.
Talbot,
I was in Turkey in early June and talk there was that the only way to stop Erdogan was a coup.

// Be honest Gromit, you spotted articles that suggested a coup was on the cards? If no one else had suggested it then fair play but many had suggested it. //

I read no such article when I posted on here last month. As I said above, it was pretty obvious it was coming so no doubt others predicted it, but I didn't read them. I have just done a quick search and cannot find any articles from a month ago, but as you spotted many, I'm sure you will have no problem supplying links to one or two.
