/// He will die in jail as he is serving a whole-life tariff. ///

Judging by the number of horrendous killings that take place today, why is this type of sentence not more frequently handed out?

they'd all be on my B ark anyway
Then barring transportation to the colonies, you have answered your own question. You've ruled out all the options and have to pay for them to be a guest at her majesty's pleasure. Mind you if it is for her pleasure why doesn't she pay for them ?
Well he's going to a prison near the area where he committed these horrendous crimes - lets hope he meets up with some inmates who think remember what he did.

We pay for our criminals to be incarcerated because that is part of the price for being a civilised society.
"We pay for our criminals to be incarcerated because that is part of the price for being a civilised society. " - yes but why can't we outsource the job to get it done a bit cheaper, Turkey? Thailand? etc...

Because that would put a serious dent in the 'civilised' part of a civilised society.
He hasn't fared so well when he's been out in Gen. Pop. Prison-wise and I believe he'll rue the day that he's sent to HMP.

As an aside, my BiL is 'at her Majesties' in and has been in a succession of Secure Mental hospitals for just shy of 30 years....despite his best efforts, he's never managed to persuade the 'mickey-mouse' trick-cyclists that he's sane enough to live amongst us again.
hang on are you saying that only our prisons are civilised?
AOG - completel mish mash of non-sequiturs we have come to expect from you.

why has it taken - why has it taken ....

You dont 'go mad' and 'go sane' in this modern day and age
At his trial those with a long memory will recollect that the question of his sanity was raised but the jury (!) found he was sane as a "matter of fact"

within in a year of conviction ( as sane) he was so hopelessly crazy he was wadmitted to Broadmoor. Now they say he will respond to no further treatment which is a kinda funny way of saying he is sane....

as for a cushy life in a facility for disturbed convicts - somehow I dont think so.
// hang on are you saying that only our prisons are civilised?//

try a few episodes of 'bangkok embassy' - Oz embassy in Thai -it is about the only thing you dont ( bang your ....c )
...surely it is racist to criticise other countries penal systems.
Sutcliffe will be a 'high profile prisoner' and as a 'lifer' will be entitled to a single occupancy cell. He will not have any where near the freedom he has in Broadmoor, but it will be a tolerable existence. His notoriety will ensure he enjoys a measure of 'respect' in jail. It is only people such as child killers / abusers that are in danger from other inmates inside a jail.

That's surely something we cannot answer never having been privy to any interviews or studies of his mental capacity.

Your last question...

//why is this type of sentence not more frequently handed out? //

Is I feel far more up for discussion, I would like to see full life terms given more often.
I don't think that's correct Eddie!
Ummmm I have worked inside a jail and talked to several murderers face to face, Sutcliffe is regarded as almost a 'hero' or 'role model' by some of them.
"It is only people such as child killers / abusers that are in danger from other inmates inside a jail"

That ^^ isn't true and I know enough people who have been to prison.
I agree TTT, a proper jail would be a much better option. I'm pretty sure the Saudi's could help out here or perhaps some of the ISIS supporters would prefer their chums in the Islamic State to help out, I'm sure an ISIS jail is no picnic?

I see Sutcliffe has threatened hunger Strike. Lets hope he sees it through to the end and saves us 50K a year.
There is no such thing as an ISIS jail. Dungeon maybe....but not a jail.
good points YMB, we just are clueless about running proper jails, I'm all for paying the experts to do it for us and a fraction of our own Holiday camps.
"There is no such thing as an ISIS jail. Dungeon maybe..." - that's plenty zacs!
