/// He will die in jail as he is serving a whole-life tariff. ///
Judging by the number of horrendous killings that take place today, why is this type of sentence not more frequently handed out?

I would not wish to speak for TTT, but if deduce correctly, his view (and feel free to chip in if I am wrong TTT) - is that our jails are far too soft, and we should be keeping prisoners in far harsher conditions than he perceives that we do in the UK.
My view is that the incarceration and loss of liberty is the punishment, and in a civilised society, that is as far as we would wish to go - I do not believe that prisons are the 'holiday camps' of tabloid perception.
As far as a 'deterrent' goes - it may work for a once-incarcerated criminal who may avoid going back, it is no deterrent at all to anyone else, because no criminal every believes he will be caught.

TCL - "TTT if prison is so easy, would you fancy spending a few year in gaol? " - no I would not, prison does deter me, it should be tough enough to deter the criminal scum, that's the point. Nothing deters 100% but you can deter most, at the moment criminals do not fear jail, that's why our jails are too soft.
TTT - // ... at the moment criminals do not fear jail, that's why our jails are too soft. //
As I have pointed out previously, criminals don;t fear jail because they don;t ever think they will end up there!
If any criminal thought about the consequences of their actions, they would not commit the crime.
But criminals, by definition, are not usually very bright, so thinking ahead to consequences is not in their mind set, and that is what is needed for any deterant to work.
Ask any criminal in any prison for anything if he thought he would end up there - what do you think the answer would be?

If you apply the principle that 'normal' people do not commit murder, you are left with the fact that anyone who does, is insane maybe temporarily at the time of committing the act but certainly not normal. Can we therefore say that all killers are insane & should be placed in special places for the criminally insane ?

No.
The act of murder is not the behavior of a sane person, but that lapse of sanity may be temporary, and not the same as the mind-set of someone who has long term and potentially untreatable mental health isues.
