Whether or not one agrees with this, the woman should have known the law, just as a bikini wearing Western woman should know an Islamic country's laws.

People are forgetting that the situation is tense in the south of France, France gnerally in fact. Only a few weeks ago a murderer with possible Islamist motives drove a lorry through a crowd of people in Nice. I don't blame the authorities for wanting to minimise overt displays of affiliation to Islam in a French seaside resort at the current time. The...

ChillDoubt, as I said, all the arguments are in the Mail article. The response to this one is here:
The video, which was posted on Twitter, shows children crying and shouting as the women are spoken to by the officers. Ms Ben Mohamed has accused the French authorities of "shamefully mixing up terrorists with the wider Muslim community." She said "this type of row is totally counterproductive and plays into Isis's hands."
"It's exactly what Isis want - the mayor is doing their work for them. Isis seeks to make our young people believe that they are excluded, stigmatised, and they will use such examples in their recruitment drive."

Khandro.....I am almost overwhelmed ....first TTT and now you !
I would dearly love to see the wording of this law, and the solution that was found to define the word BURKINI. As far as I am aware, it didn't exist until recently and was probably coined by the Media.
The word seems to imply that it is some kind of bikini, it quite obviously isn't, instead of some kind of one piece bathing suit..
As someone has already said, how does a Burkini differ from jogging bottoms and a t-shirt ? If the woman in the picture were to go and change into a pair of jogging bottoms and a t-shirt, would she still be flouting the law ?
What happens when it gets a bit nippy on the beach ? If lots of women, Muslim and Christian alike were to put a sweat shirt on, would they be guilty of breaking this new by-law ?
What about the Muslim women that don't wear Burkinis, and look just like any other kind of French woman ?
A good lawyer could drive a coach and horses through any resulting court case, and that is the primary reason why its daft.

My wife spends three months a year in Abu Dhabi, and is very well aware of the cultural expectations of western women (and no, they are not enforced by gun-carrying policemen) and she is happy to comply.

You're attempting (rather poorly) to make a big issue of the 'gun-toting' Gendarmes. In case you hadn't noticed, all Police in mainland Europe are routinely armed(not separate ARU's as used in UK)........as are the Police in Abu Dhabi. How odd!
Maybe they don't attend incidents involving Christians/atheists in great numbers as neither of those I've mentioned have taken many lives in the name of god/no god (where applicable) in heinous terrorist acts!

naomi; That photo was taken under the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi who was the Shah of Iran from 1941 until his overthrow by the Iranian Revolution on 11 February 1979.
// Spot the difference and ask yourself what happened.//
What happened was the Iranian revolution (by popular demand).
You may not like the change and I may not like the change, but the internal politics of Iran is not what we are discussing.

No they don't, because the massive majority of Christians and Atheists are peaceful law-abiding people - just like Muslims!!!!

shamefully mixing up terrorists with the wider Muslim community.

Therein lies the problem and probable perception of the wider French public i.e. the adage of:
Not all muslims are terrorists.....but in recent events in France, all terrorists have been muslims. Knee-jerk or not, it seems popular right now with the French public, especially in Southern France.

Knee-jerk it absolutely is, and the government pandering to it is not remotely helpful, with a draconian law enforced with inappropriate zeal.
Do the French want radicalised Muslims to think they are living in a police state? Well, here's some evidence to back up that notion.

Chilli...bigotry against Jews was very popular too, in 1930's Germany.
In fact, if you study the history, you will see that good German citizens fell over themselves to report strange goings-on with their Jewish neighbours.
And I am sure it made all those good German feel so much safer when their Jewish neighbours suddenly disappeared.
