Whether or not one agrees with this, the woman should have known the law, just as a bikini wearing Western woman should know an Islamic country's laws.

People are forgetting that the situation is tense in the south of France, France gnerally in fact. Only a few weeks ago a murderer with possible Islamist motives drove a lorry through a crowd of people in Nice. I don't blame the authorities for wanting to minimise overt displays of affiliation to Islam in a French seaside resort at the current time. The...

To be fair, there are obvious parallels. Only the jackboots are missing in that beach photo

And the yellow star, suitcase with all her worldly possessions and a movement order to attend Auschwitz via the nearest train station. Bar that, it's all there!
Chili....I am addressing the current issue, and I have made the point,
many times on here, that an unenforceable by-law isn't going to make any difference.

The French seem to want to demonise all Muslims, instead of the few that are militant. France has about 5 million Muslims and only a very tiny proportion of those are, or where involved in terrorist acts.

Militant Islam is a very serious problem for us here in Europe, as well as most of the Middle East, but it won't be solved by interfering with what some women want to wear on a beach.

Those Police out patrolling the beaches would be better employed in the fight against terrorism, not looking for problems were they don't exist.
Shameful naomi? Entire religious group stigmatised by the state, innocent women picked out ... the parallels are there.

Some direct quotes from the Mail article: "three police officers watching the beach. One of them had his finger on the trigger of his tear gas device" ... "a pack going after a woman sitting on the ground, crying with her daughter" ... "police officers armed with pepper spray and batons marched onto a beach today and ordered a woman to strip off" ... "People then started shouting insults at Siam, telling her she was not welcome in France"

It was very popular in many other places as well, - still bloody well is!
Khandro - mikey; //.bigotry against Jews was very popular too, in 1930's Germany.//

But today, not as popular as bigotry against Muslims!
Yes Khandro....I was bullied back in he 60's, because my father was Irish !

Bigotry will never go away, but it shouldn't be state-sponsored.
So if this ban is on all external religious clothing - how on earth are nuns and priests going to go about their business?

Will they have to change into halter tops and hotpants before exiting their churches?

Doubtful - the bigotry of the government echoes the bigotry of the media - strictly selective.
for GAWDS SAKE stop copying and pasting previous answers. Aaaaaarrrrggh.

Sorry, It's the heat.

It's great that the French police can dedicate so many resources to patrolling beaches looking for clothing breaches.

I'm sure that we can all agree that this is a much better use of resources than, say intelligence gathering (online monitors is very labour intensive) or street patrols or even investigating ongoing crimes not connected to terrorism.

Bravo les gendarmes.

A ludicrous show of force - tick.

Plenty of people who would not otherwise have batted an eyelid see a Muslim woman being bullied and her children frightened - tick.

Worldwide media attention - tick.

Pandering to rightwing voters - tick.

Looking hard and productive while actually being neither - tick.

Leaving a bad taste in the mouth of anyone who doesn't like institutionalised racism - tick.

You know, it's starting to look like a real result all round!

I wish we could do all that!

Although on second thoughts ... maybe not ...
Just thought of something which the police definitely shouldn't be doing.

They should not be assigning officers to identify extremists sites, then launching class actions to get the hosting ISPs shut down.

And they definitely shouldn't initiate international trade sanctions against countries in which these ISPs are physically hosted.

...because that doesn't make good photos for the papers, allowing people to see that 'something is being done'.

Loving the fact that Muslim have one bunch of people telling them to cover up, and another telling them to get uncovered.

Wonder whether they've actually been asked their opinion?
I just need someone to back up some nonsense I read earlier in this thread - that this is a ban on all religious garments.

That sounds like a giant steaming pile to be honest.
It's the law of the land, the police were right.
It's the Law, abide by it, Security First, Burka 2nd, NO ISSUE, don't like the law that was caused by Terrorist's, Hard Luck.

Ellipsis, yes shameful. (Funny how everyone usually ridicules the Mail. That emotive language certainly worked this time).
In your opinion naomi, which you continue to spout as long as you are given the oxygen to do so.

Do you believe the French authorities?

You stated earlier that the BBC reported that it's actually a ban on all visible religious symbolism

Doesn't that sound like cobblers to you?
TWR

If you're referring to the burkha, that's one thing.

How does the burkhini affect security?

Is the security of France compromised by a Muslim woman in a wetsuit?

If not, why not?

This law is ridiculous.

Really, really, really ridiculous.
