Whether or not one agrees with this, the woman should have known the law, just as a bikini wearing Western woman should know an Islamic country's laws.

People are forgetting that the situation is tense in the south of France, France gnerally in fact. Only a few weeks ago a murderer with possible Islamist motives drove a lorry through a crowd of people in Nice. I don't blame the authorities for wanting to minimise overt displays of affiliation to Islam in a French seaside resort at the current time. The...

Not taking sides on this (if you want to avoid sunburn you can wear a kaftan sort of thing, not a burkini, so that argument disappears). The simple point is that it is against the law. If you break the law you incur penalties. I would not wear a bikini in Saudi Arabia, as I respect their laws. That's all. Anyone deliberately wearing a burkini on a French beach, where it is banned, is being deliberately provocative and needs to feel the force of the law.
That's right jourdain2 - the land of liberté, égalité, fraternité is now comparable to Saudi Arabia, one of the world's most oppressive regimes.
jourdain2, well said I totally agree with you. When in Rome as the saying goes. Silly woman, you summed her up better than I'd be allowed to.
I haven't read the whole thread, sorry. I think anyone should be able to wear whatever they want on a beach.
I don't like Burkas, they are oppressive and can be intimidating. But on a beach, how is it ok to try to force a woman to take clothes off?
At the risk of repeating myself, this is bad law - the sight of those officers around that lady on the beach serves only to widen a gap between people, not to narrow it.
Viewing the photos, what she's wearing does not look like a Burkini ...more like a cotton top and trousers. I'm appalled at how this was handled...forcing a woman to uncover parts of her body in public. Why so heavy handed? Why not a quiet word and reminder of the new law.
Oh...and some say why not a wetsuit instead? But a wetsuit, because of how fitted it is,is far more revealing of a woman's body. So I'd certainly not see it as a suitable substitute.
Burkinis seem to come in all shapes and styles...

Agreed they do.
Thank you mamya.
So it's just a top and trousers, not a full-blown in-your-face burka. I think I might like to wear that sometimes.
Ellipsis, // In your opinion naomi, which you continue to spout as long as you are given the oxygen to do so.//

Careful, Getting personal is always evidence of a desperately flagging argument.

//That's right jourdain2 - the land of liberté, égalité, fraternité is now comparable to Saudi Arabia, one of the world's most oppressive regimes.//

Wow!! First you compare France to Nazi Germany - and now to Saudi Arabia? Really? Are you sure about that? You need to calm the hysterics and take a serious reality check.
Naomi, I'm not the one getting personal - you are. Read back through this thread and you'll see you hardly make any points, simply snipe at others. I did not compare France to Saudi Arabia, jourdain2 did. No hysterics here.
// That's right jourdain2 - the land of liberté, égalité, fraternité is now comparable to Saudi Arabia,//

well they both have laws you have to obey ( or else they wouldnt be laws )

as for wear what you like on a beach oh please
does that include nothing ?
I cant think of any western country that allows nudism on standard beaches
The whole wet-suit thing was just a stupid post, so I ignored it !

As most people on here have said, this is heavy-handedness by the Police, desperately trying to enforce a totally unenforceable local by-law.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité ?....not any more it isn't. Its just State-sponsored bigotry.

Its amazing how a few people on here would support such a draconian law like this.
Seems harsh on the woman but those robes could conceal a kalashnikov or bomb; too risky in a crowd. Men have been known to wear burkas for foul deeds.
Tambo....there is no restriction on what men can wear on the beaches of Nice......couldn't a man conceal a weapon under his clothing ?

People normally take a large towel with them when they go to the beach.
I expect quite a few guns could be hidden inside a rolled up towel !

But this daft by-law isn't about safety though, is it ?
I think it's ridiculous.
On that we can agree Ummm !
I'm happy in vests and shorts but I'm not comfortable walking round in swimwear so I can only imagine it's much worse for women who are used to being covered up.
