So let's get this right. Council "tenants" were subletting council properties. To Whom? Illegal immigrants? Were these same tenants also renting another council property whilst subletting? If they were in a home they owned, how come they were able to obtain a tenancy, and if they purchased afterwards how come they don't show on council tax records. Ever...

They're getting one in the hope folk come forward and the situation clarifies. A mistaken move in my opinion. If folk don't wish to volunteer information it won't change the reality anyway.
It's about clarification of names and numbers, seems logical to me.
This feels wrong to me. I know why it is offered, but it is saying that rule-breaking is OK. Others will be encouraged to carry-on subletting.
Perhaps a half-way house of something like 'We'll let you off this time, but your name is on a list - so don't try it again' would do?

spot on Jourdain.
Immunity from prosecution have been given by the various prosecuting authorities in the UK over the past decades in return for evidence provided.

In the great scheme of things, is it preferable for the next of kin to be made aware of a relative's death or for the letter of the law to be adhered to?

The next of kin will realise. Tragedy in London where their relative was, followed by the relative no longer found. Getting let off is a reward given for little or no real gain for society.
Ever likely there is an official housing shortage. Do they get to register for benefits and voting rights in two different properties? Are they perhaps willing to be considered deceased and have a claim for compensation processed by "family"? When local people maintained that they were being shunted to the back of the waiting lists for social housing, they were called racist bigots who were anti "diversity". If this is happening all over the Country the authorities are ever likely to want a cover up. Corruption has visited our shores as a way of life.
Some of those questions may be answered if people come forward with information.
How many fire-protection doors removed too, given the debacle in Camden?
There is a lot of uncomfortable truths in Togo's post.
Uncovering subletting and all that goes with it is something that should be addressed far better than it is.
First and foremost it's an attempt to offset the pigs anus that officialdom made of a terrible situation.

Agree with you, Talbo.....
Ta Webbo, It is a relief to get it off my chest TBH.

Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for social housing.

Quite right.

sp1814 , who said they were doing it legally, if they were subletters they wouldn't be on the books and non existent.

Dave.
What is the non point meant to suggest sp? I did not allude that illegal immigrants could obtain social housing. They don't need to register when people are willing to sub let to them, after they themselves have been allowed to enter the system.
sub letting is a huge problem in London..agree they should not go unpunished..the people in the flats who were paying rent albeit to an unauthorised source may not have been aware, and they perished..the folks who had the tenancy and were acting illegaly should be dealt with as per normal...
I think they have better things to worry about at the moment like finding an accurate death toll.

They can deal with subletting in the future.
