Regular bars do work in that situation. A pub in town that I use on a regular basis was taken over by a large contingent (at least 50% of the pub) of gay people last night and guess what ... nobody gave a ....

Think about the mechanics of that.

People who have never met before would all have to agree on one specific bar to go to on one specific night.

No-one gave a toss, which is fine - but it's still a pretty difficult situation to organise.

No...because you would have to post to people you don't know and who aren't your FB friends.

Remember, I've been talking specifically about one of the USPs of gay friendly bars for gay people...it's the 'going on the pull' thing.

You cannot do that practically by posting an invitation to gay friends on Facebook to go to a regular bar - because the vast majority of patrons will be straight.

When people go out to meet new people, it's new people they're interested in, rather than their existing circle of friends.

Therefore, unless you have about 300 friends on Facebook that you've never met before, it's not going to make any sense arranging a night out with them at a regular bar.

sqad,I don't know whether you have noticed but many gay people have a particular style of dress that makes them stand out (if that fact upsets some posters so be it) there were also lots of blokes dancing with each other that doesn't happen in the Urban often.

I said at least 50% Zacs but you don't need anywhere near 50% to take over a pub. I'm not sure what is going on in your mind but by taking over the pub I mean being in charge of the vibe ... and they were certainly in charge of the vibe last night.

Surely there are gay groups on Facebook, sp?

I know the pub well and the pub was at least half full of gay people who do not frequent the place on a normal basis. Some sort of arrangements had obviously made for them to meet there.

The reason why it wouldn't work is that it's incredibly impractical.

Think of it this way, three mates are going out on the pull. They can either:

a) Go to a gay friendly bar

or

b) Log into Facebook. Find a group and suggest to that group that everyone meet up at a certain pub/bar/club on Saturday night.

With a) the three friends can go to the bar, stay there, or head of to another, or any other number of gay friendly establishments in the area.

With b) they have a number of like-minded individuals in one bar. They're stuck there.

Also, there will never be a FB group which has numbers like those in bars in metropolitan areas. It might be in option if you live out of the way, but if you're in London, Brighton, Blackpool, Manchester, Birmingham etc it makes no sense to ever go for option b) whilst option a) exists.
