since it's becoming increasingly accepted that gender is less about chromosomes, appearance or reproductive ability but more a matter of state of mind not necessarily requiring reassignment intervention (and the gender recognition act 2004 is likely to be amended to reflect this), are the "X-X" denizens of the Kenwood Ladies Pond Association being a tad unreasonable?

Unless it's a skinny dipping only pool, having a ladies only pool is vastly more sexist than having ladies only changing.
It isn't sexist because, presumably in this case (unlike in Saudi Arabia for example) this is something women actually want. Are men sufferening genuiine discrimination due to the restricted access to this pool: I somehow doubt it.
I am sure there are individual cases worthy of exception, but I'd have thought that until you have actually changed gender then a mixed pool is particularly appropriate.

///Because it's not the central issue of the story, Baldric///

If having a Female only pool is Sexist (your words) then surely it has to follow that a Male only pool is also Sexist?
// increasingly accepted that gender is less about chromosomes, appearance or reproductive ability//

erm as an intellect Mushie - this was always the case innit ?
In Latin, mensa is feminine gender and agricola is masculine
NOT female sex and male sex

anyway you mushie know that I am not really - a "sex, wot dat den?" kinda fellow - so there is a legal case Corbett v Corbett where a judge Ormerod discusses all this - gender- chromosomes etc
Ormerod was also MB BS
http://www.vanuatu.usp.ac.fj/courses/LA306_Family_Law/Cases/Corbett_v_Corbett.html
so there has been a dsictinct separation between identity behaviour chromosomes and anatomy since the 1970s

it was the only case I immediately and implicitly understtod when I was reading law in 1973

and hey presto ! back to the usual AB fare ....
So I could turn up at a female only pond, don a bikini, claim to be trans and swim backstroke with a hard on ?
“So I could turn up at a female only pond, don a bikini, claim to be trans and swim backstroke with a hard on ?”

Quite, derek. There is little doubt that the lunatics have now fully taken over the asylum. The idea that people can “choose” which gender they want to “identify with” is so laughable if it were not serious. Like it or not there are two genders. A few – a very few – people unfortunately suffer a gender identity problem. They need support and help. But to suggest that anybody can pick and choose what gender they want to be is preposterous.

Again, like it or not, many (probably most) people – of both genders - prefer to have single sex changing facilities. Many people also like to take advantage of single sex facilities for things such as swimming and other physical exercise. These should be delineated by the physical attributes the people involved have, not what clothes they fancy wearing. To allow otherwise is utter lunacy.
Not quite, nj. There is any amount of gender- as p.p. says- it's part of personality. However, there are male, female and intersex as sexes, and that won't change no matter what you do. In this case identity is irrelevant, It's defined by sex, not gender, for obvious reasons.
Most of the problem nowadays seems to be the confusion between gender and sex now that the words are often interchanged. And the bizarre belief they somehow have to "match".
I think that's more for the boating pond, Derek.
Sail ahoy! :)
You'd have to play the theme to Jaws :-)
irrelevant points ric ror
the german frauleins want an area they can be sure that mens hands wont find their way up their knickers - and they dont want the advice "well dont go out then!"

and somehow I kinda think that it not uppermost in the Konwood Ladies' minds

before I was ill I have a hazy memory of a lesnian louding shouting in a pub that she wanted to use the men's lavatory.

just saying

Threads running on both those linked matters Ric.
Not unreasonable at all. People can pretend to be whatever they like, but that doesn't make a man a woman or vice versa.
I once went to a women's only session at our local pool. Absolute nightmare, full of ladies doing breaststroke very slowly chatting to each other several abreast, couldn't get a decent swim in at all. Vowed to stick to the mixed sessions after that where there was a much stronger possibility of being able to get on with it.
Perhaps it is indeed time to decide, "Animal, Vegetable, or Miserable. :)) Night Swimming anyone?..... Or is that nice wimmin?
It's ignorant for people to say that transgendered people 'pretend' to be a member of the opposite sex.
very SP
Why it ignorant, sp? It is literally true.
I wonder does Derek do the backstroke at full mast in the mixed or male pools?
