Have they been arrested because it is feared that they may be a threat to our safety or because they are members of a banned group?

Can't be the former because the police have insisted there is no threat to public safety.

/// I believe there just has to be intelligence that they are prepared to carry out such activities and then the decision is made about membership. ///

Providing that it is not the membership of a particular religion.
When did being a member of a particular religion become illegal AOG?
aog, you’re arguing for argument’s sake. Islamic groups that are deemed dangerous are banned too.

/// Apparently they were arrested on suspicion of preparing to commit acts of terrorism, according to the BBC news
website. ///

Not on this BBC web site, which states:

/// Six people have been arrested on suspicion of being members of the banned far-right group National Action. ///

Togo,

Yes, the elected Government proscrible. But that is on information supplied from the security sevices who are largely not politically aligned with the Conservative or Labour Governments.
/// Six people have been arrested on suspicion of being members of the banned far-right group National Action. ///

aog, that's^ what happened. What more is there to say?

// They were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism //

In answer to your original question:

//Have they been arrested because it is feared that they may be a threat to our safety or because they are members of a banned group//

Looks like it’s both.

When the police say that there is no threat to public safety, it appears that what they mean is that because the arrests have been intelligence-led, they are happy that as the key members are now in custody, there is no current threat from them.

If, say, the police had intelligence that there were unaccounted for members who were still at large - the the statement might be different.
//But that is on information supplied from the security sevices who are largely not politically aligned with the Conservative or Labour Governments. //sic.

Well that is a relief, not "politically aligned" I mean. Like say the NHS or plod or the NUT?
Togo,

You think the security services are working for the Conservative Party and not the country. So the arrests are political rather than for the public’s safety. Presumably if the Conservatives close every far right organisation, they will get more votes themselves.

I think you are wrong.
At what point does right become far-right, or left become far-left, for that matter? Just a thought.

When they support or advocate illegal acts ?
OAG...going straight to your question ::::::

"Six people were arrested on suspicion of being part of banned far-right group"

That is what the DM article says, so why ask the question in the first place ?

//You think the security services are working for the Conservative Party and not the country.//

Gromit.
It was the Conservative Party that introduced the legislation regarding the "proscribing" of groups or organisations deemed to be a threat then.
// Presumably if the Conservatives close every far right organisation, they will get more votes themselves. //

How many National Action "members" have, or are about to stand for election?
I think what Gromit meant is that the security services do not work for the Conservative Party per se. They work on behalf of the elected Government.

Effectively - they're working on our behalf.

Same as the Civil Service. Their purpose is to effect policy and legislation as laid down by the current Government and ratified by the House of Lords.

Democracy in action.
Togo,
Governments, Labour or Conservatives act on information supplied to them by the Security Services (SS). They monitor all kinds of political groups - Unions, campaign groups, and individuals. ‘Scottish Dawn’ will have been subject to monitoring, and illegal activities must have been found for the SS to recommend banning them (and the Government in power at the time proscribing them).

National Action is just a rebrand of the already banned Scottish Dawn, so their proscribing was a foregone conclusion.
It was the Conservative Party that introduced the legislation regarding the "proscribing" of groups or organisations deemed to be a threat then.
dunno, but it was amber rudd according to the earlier lin who proscribed this group
Tell me when was this legislation introduced into the "parliamentary" tool box and who was in government. Then try telling me the year that a party, and which one, in mainstream British politics first used the "phrase" in an attempt to become more user friendly?
what "phrase"?
