In all this brexit shambles I regularly hear a call for a general election Surely that would simply un focus us from the immediate task. Brexit/remain is a cross party issue so surely a GE would simply obfuscate further. Dump the PM by all means and introduce a brexiteer to tell the EU how we are leaving but stop all this GE cobras.

“…and Theresa May was thrown in at the deep end.” No she wasn’t. She jumped in both feet first, dismissing Andrea Leadsom from the contest in the process. “…why? what would happen if UK/ROI/NI did nothing at all?” I’ve asked that question directly on here and was dismissed as a nutcase, 3Ts. An MP (whose name escapes me) asked the same...

It would not be any help at all.
A general election can only be of help if it's coupled with some extension of the Article 50 process.
I suppose I could have added "and perhaps not even then".
The answer is Labour to ditch Corbyn , make Keir Starmer their leader, hold a general election . then Whoo Hoo , Bye Bye Conservatives.
I don’t think it would help at all.

But it a useful tool for Labour to get into power. The Tories are in such disarray and people exasperated by the way May has handled Brexit it would be handing Corbyn the keys.

Therefore Labour are likely to be the main advocates for a GE.

We would then be in a cleft stick. They may well call off Brexit.

Who would we be able to vote for then? Conservative who made a hash of it or Labour who ignored the referendum?
I doubt that Keir Starmer is really a socialist, Gulliver. So the Labour membership wouldn't vote him in.
Yes - bring on Corbyn - stop all this bl**** nonsense and get on with things. The UK going to hell in a handcart at the moment.
" The answer is Labour to ditch Corbyn , make Keir Starmer their leader, hold a general election . then Whoo Hoo , Bye Bye Conservatives."
And there we have it in a nutshell, while government and the rest of the country are trying to come to terms over leaving the EU, labourites plan a general election to gain power. Underhanded and selfish but would you expect anything else?
"Underhanded and selfish but would you expect anything else?" Oh come on vulcan - people do expect much more. We're in a total shambles, lurching from one crisis to the next.
A chief part of the reason we're in this mess is because Theresa May called a General Election, instead of getting on with leaving the EU while we were coming to terms with it.

Underhanded and selfish, but would you expect anything less...?

yes that's part of it jim but she still would have ended up with the same non-deal so in a way it's better that she has no majority to push this disaster through the house.
I'll vote UKIP and if that lets Steptoe win I'll demand another go.
(Think I'll call it 'The Peoples Vote'. Quite catchy, innit?)
I just wanted to point out the rather sad irony of vulcan's post. Criticising Labour for trying to do exactly what the Tories did; what's more, Labour can only shout about it, whereas the Tories always had a choice whether or not to call an election.
Cmon people let's have a name ...who's going to get us out of this mess?
Michael Gove.
Haha, sure -- Govey just blinked rather than step up, so why would you turn to him?
Let's have a name then Jim ...please
NICOLA STURGEON
Pmsl maggie
Joe Public.
