Here's another. When asked to comment on the 1,400 German women assaulted and robbed, surrounded by Muslim gangs and in some dozen cases raped (that's real rape if you know the difference, or care about it) in Cologne New Year's Eve 2014 Ms ("I burst into tears after those horrible tweets. Pass me a hanky, Vicky") Phillips quipped:
"1,400 hundred? Sounds like a normal Friday night in Broad Street[Birmingham] to me".

'Why bother with a milkshake when you could get a sharp knife'?
Look at the outcry (and rightly so) when that UKIP member came out with “I wouldn’t even rape you Jess Phillips”?
Not to mention Bernard Manning and Jim Davison when they dared to tell jokes aimed at blacks and other ethnic minorities.

My defence of Jo Brand is nothing to do with politics - hers or mine - it is about a sense of proportion, context, and intent, all of which I have outlined in previous posts.

That's another pointless debate - she didn't say that, so there is no point 'What if'ing' because it goes nowhere, we are talking about what was said, not making it up to go nowhere.

As I pointed out, there is a difference between the seriousness you can attach to a comment by a professional comdian, as against an amateur agitator - which once again comes down to proportion, context, and intent.

As I pointed out, there is a difference between the seriousness you can attach to a comment by a professional comdian, as against an amateur agitator - which once again comes down to proportion, context, and intent.
The reason that radio man was sacked, is because he was heavily racist in an age where a good % of the audience he was talking to is black.

Absolutely - it's hardly reasonable of the BBC to set up a programme whose remit is to take conversation to the edge of acceptability, and the sack someone for complying with that format - which is probably a good reason why the BBC have declined to sack Ms. Brand.

I agree. Interesting to note that by late yesterday Ofcom had only received 19 complaints which tends to endorse the view that the public at large accept the remark is not hate speech.

Once again you appear to be steering the debate off-topic.
My opinions of Messrs. Davidson and Manning are not under discussion here - but since you mention them, they were extremely popular in their time, but society has moved on, and their brand of humour is largely seen as unacceptable to today's values in society.
But since we are not discussing the humour of comedians from a generation ago, I am sure we can avoid diverting the thread by discussing them further.

Once again you appear to be steering the debate off-topic.
My opinions of Messrs. Davidson and Manning are not under discussion here - but since you mention them, they were extremely popular in their time, but society has moved on, and their brand of humour is largely seen as unacceptable to today's values in society.
But since we are not discussing the humour of comedians from a generation ago, I am sure we can avoid diverting the thread by discussing them further.

Each case is individual, obviously, but I think in the case of Danny Baker, not only did he use a spectacularly crass piece of judgement by posting the image and caption that he did, his action could be seen as far more offensive to a far larger number of people, and he then compounded his stupidity by inferring that the fault lay with the people he upset, inferring that they were racist by virtue of their interpretation of his joking reference to members of the royal family.
So on all levels, it was seen as far worse than what Ms Brand has done, and his dismissal followed.

It's not as if Jo Brand is a new kid on the block. She has been around for decades and in that time one can see her style of comedy and this sort of comment is not surprising to me at all.
I would tend to view her personality when she is not performing on stage and screen as not an inciteful or vindictive person but someone who can laugh at her own shortcomings and let's not forget she has pushed her own limits to raise funds for good causes too.

The change in comedy started circa 60 years ago....Max Wall..the odd doubtful joke......then Bernard Manning and Chubby Brown...the F word seemingly now acceptable (even with children), it is known as "giving the audience what they want and the thoughts are that the want obscenity an Political crudeness.
