No link as they seem to want to keep it low profile but it looks like Sainsburys have taken the decision not to sell fireworks this year. If you or someone you know are affected by the constant barrage of noise, mess and smoke that happens at this season (and when did Firework Night become Firework season?) then you might like to comment on their facebook page or website? Hopefully another step in the right direction.

Much as I would love to say something to spath, I realise it would be a complete waste of time so I won't waste my time and energy. This is just to let anyone know who might be interested in contacting Sainsburys. I wrote them an email to congratulate them for taking this stance, but unfortunately, it has come back as having the wrong email address. I left the s off so...

//Well i wonder how they felt during the war with all the bombs and the IRA etcc how on earth did the poor pouches cope!//

Stupid bone headed comparison. The 2nd WW was invited upon this country. The populus had no choice to accept the blitz.
Due to heavy rationing many domestic pets had to be put down. Scraps didn't go to your pet dog. They went to the pig swill bin to feed pigs.

Spath in the war they didn't cope.
Oh and its not just on here. The last .gov petition has hit almost 400,000 signatures.
It's not actually it's a very similar comparison. Random loud noises and bangs, with some flashy lights.

The populous has no choice but to accept that people let off fireworks.

If and when but mainly IF fireworks become illegal for personal use then i will partly understand why but i'l also feel that life has even more restrictions and limitations on it.

I think the police has more important things to deal with than people getting upset about some noise before 11pm.
This thread contains some of the more irrational and ill-thought out responses I've ever seen on AB.

I'll be thanking the manager of my local Sainsbury's when I'm next in there.
Yeah i'm sure her personally had suttin to do with it (LOL)
//The populous has no choice but to accept that people let off fireworks. //

At the moment that is correct but it's obvious it's not accepted by all the people or Sainsbury wouldn't be taking this stand.
Are you the sort who believes just because the Great Uncle Sam does it then we must follow suit?
No but i believe that people should have a choice what they wish to do, and if that's let off fireworks then they have every right to do so as long as they do it safely.
I think half the reason sainsburys are doing as they are is because... Financial benefit. That's literally it.

They probs didn't make anything from fireworks anyhow. So they're doing this for a publicity stunt to get some fame and money.

Sainsburys has been a sinking ship for a while now. It is no longer seen as higher end, it's just expensive and crap.

Pet lovers who have some feeling for the suffering of their animals actually have to try to sedate their pets on the eve of 5th November.
Are they expected to keep their pets in a half comatose zombie state for most of the year just to feed the pleasure of selfish juvenile minds who only think of themselves?
I'm not sure what they're expected to do.

But we force dogs to work for the police, army etc.. etc..

I wonder if those dogs don't like loud noises?

Maybe people need to train their dogs not to go wild or terrified over a bit of a whizz bang.

Lets restrict human activity because some dogs get upset.... ? Doesn't run with me.
Dogs are not forced to work for the police!!
If the dogs show abilities and enjoy the work and training they are picked if not they are rehoused
Until this year, my dog was a shaking, drooling, inconsolable and very scared animal. This would be for a good 2 weeks in October and a further week in November. Walking her was difficult as the first hint of noise and she'd be violently trembling, and be off...sometimes aware of the noise well before weaker human ears. This would continue as the New Year got closer.
I wouldn't wish that on any beast.

I do 60% of my shopping at Sainsbury...never any doubts about quality or price.
Spath...you are either extremely insensitive, or this is an act.
Spath, of all the dogs I have had, the only ones that had problems with fireworks were the rescue dogs. Dogs that
I brought up from puppies were all fine.
Once a dog has an ingrained fear of noise, it is very difficult to alleviate that fear.
"Dogs are not forced to work for the police!!"

right.. Like they know any different. They're trained to accept situations etc.. Think army dogs volunteer to go skydiving?
Tilly i understand what you mean, and i do sympathise but not to the extent that we need to stop one of autumns most communal times of the year.
Pasta, I agree with you. Spath is being deliberately provocative and is trying to wind people up for some strange reason.
'stop one of autumns most communal times of the year.'

What on earth does that mean, Spath?
//But we force dogs to work for the police, army etc.. etc..//

You have absolutely no idea Spath about Police dogs and training.
My father was a police dog handler. In 1956 the dog was a National police dog champion . It was trained by my father. It was happy to chase and disarm a fugitive who was firing a starting pistol in his face and bring the fugitive down. The dog had the courage of a Lion, except, on 5th November when he was a shivering whimpering wreck and was unable to comprehend where the noise came from.
For the main part dogs are donated to the Police. Our dog was donated by an elderly woman as she lived in the country and couldn't control the Alsatians natural urge to round up sheep.
My father trained him to come to heel. He couldn't train the dog not to be terrified of something he couldn't see.
