Pray tell where's the ignorance in throwing the dictionary definition at you?
All the dictionary tells you is that it is a military expression, it does not elaborate on how the expression is used.
I was just going to say that it is an interesting name, the old names are creeping back aren't they. Mine may eventually become popular again (there were 5 of us in my German class at school). I was a bit surprised as it is unusual, but 'Wilf' is a nice way to shorten it. Our great-grandson is 'Archie' and a friend's grandson is 'Albie'. Feeling quite cheerful about this thread - then I read back a bit. :(
diddly, //who b***** cares what Boris's sprog is called? //

Graceless is the word that springs to my mind.
I agree it's nice shortened to Wilf. I thought they might call him something like Mungo which is a 'posh' name!
Danny - I always knew that army types were thick-skinned. I wasn't wrong.
I think there's a shortage of paper bags to start a scrap in Jourdain.

Thank goodness young Wilf can't read yet.
Usually shortened to Fred or Wilf up here in Lancashire. Lots of nicer old-fashioned names.
Naomi - I actually feel sorry for Boris's sprog as he didn't choose to have an adulterer for a father.
Diddly, as usual you think that you know better than anybody else. It is a waste of time trying to educate you. Ciao.
I think it's a smashing name & I wish the family all the best :-)
Agree with L-i k.
And me ^
diddly, //Naomi - I actually feel sorry for Boris's sprog as he didn't choose to have an adulterer for a father. //

I feel sorry for you. I'd hate to be that spiteful.
No spite Naomi - just honesty and telling it how it is. You seem to have a problem with that.
// just honesty and telling it how it is//
In a spiteful way.
The truth may hurt some but in no way is it spiteful.
You know Diddly, I defended you for what I believed was the huge overreaction to the use of the word sprog despite my getting attacked thoroughly by Naomi and others, but you've proven yourself completely unworthy of that defence.

Having discovered that others find "sprog" offensive (even though I still think that's ridiculous, but so be it) you've seemingly taken great joy in including the word as often as you can, while disingenuously badmouthing Boris (and by association, little Wilfred as well).

You're pathetic, and I heartedly regret defending you.
Wilf reminds me of school, What I'm Looking For!
