Perhaps The Apologists For Mr Cummings ...

... would like to find some excuse for this second breach of lockdown - after he was well and back at work - and when (presumably) the 'childcare' emergency was no longer valid reason?

It’s true to say that no government since WWII has been faced with such complex issues at this one is facing. Brexit is on-going, they’re currently trying to work a way through a pandemic and, because of that, the economy is facing disaster - and people get their knickers in a knot about u-turns and government employees they perceive to be less than worthy of their positions. The fact is - and anyone who is or has been an employer will understand this - even a wayward employee is worth hanging on to if he’s doing a valuable job - and only the employer can decide that. He’s not about to ask the AnswerBank for opinions - and nor should he. We appear to have become a nation populated by lip-dragging snowflakes who all think they know best and who all want it their way. The whingers need to get a grip and grow up.

This tawdry affair is the start of the unravelling of this government, and all the lockdown rules/instructions/advice will be increasingly ignored.
Where is Boris, by the way? It's said he's driven to Lambeth Palace most mornings to commune with his personal trainer in the privacy of the Palace gardens, so could he not deign to grace us with his (slimmed-down) presence, once in a while?

// he must have received some copper-bottomed assurances that the media are not going to find anything else that is going to come back and bite Mr Johnson on the behind and leave him looking like an idiot. //
Cummings couldn't have given such assurances. I wouldn't be surprised if the papers have photographs of him at the places he said he hadn't been, and were just holding them back until BJ said what he was going to say.

I think that if many had been subjected to the same degree of intrusive scrutiny something could have been found that wasn't in the spirit of the guidelines.
Really, supposedly intelligent people should take a break, have a good long look at themselves and get a life.
So much stressing over something so minor is indicative of small minds.

OK what I know of Mr Cummings I don't like. I am not his apologist or a fan but I know personally two other families who have had to do similar. I am not going to give details. They agonised about what they should do and in the end because it involved care of a vulnerable person, they did it. You won't see their names in the papers and they won't be dragged through the mud for it, but he is not the only one who has taken that decision or a similar one for family reasons.
naomi - // and people get their knickers in a knot about u-turns and government employees they perceive to be less than worthy of their positions. //
I think when a government employee is flagrantly flouting safety rules for no valid reason, then people are absolutely entitled to be vexed, and to say so.
// The fact is - and anyone who is or has been an employer will understand this - even a wayward employee is worth hanging on to if he’s doing a valuable job - and only the employer can decide that. //
'An employer' - indeed, if it's Mick the fish monger and his 'wayward employee' is his lad Spike who has got a speeding fine, but he turns out every morning to open the shop …
But this is not 'an employee' of 'an employer' - this is an individual who advises the leader of this country - short of being in the Royal Family, they couldn't be more under the spotlight, or more accountable to the nation as a whole.
He hasn't been 'wayward' - we're not talking about a teenager staying out past bedtime - this is a man who has put the lives of strangers at risk to visit his family, when thousands of other people have not done so because of HIS advice about safety and preventing infection.
// He’s not about to ask the AnswerBank for opinions - and nor should he. We appear to have become a nation populated by lip-dragging snowflakes who all think they know best and who all want it their way. The whingers need to get a grip and grow up. //
Of course he's not - but then, no-one in government ever solicits your opinion on the impending Muslim 'takeover' - but it never stops you expressing it.
We don't post on here so Boris Johnson can listen to us and take heed, we do it to communicate and exchange ideas with each other - nothing more than that, and if you don't grasp that simple concept, maybe your advice is better heeded by you than anyone else.

jim - // // Must be the last throw of the spite from the Remain losers. //
That probably applies to many of Cummings's critics, Spicey. Not so sure it does for sunny-dave or Andy, among many others, who were some of the more vocal Brexit supporters on AB consistently for the last five or six years... //
Absolutely.
I had nothing but the highest regard for Boris Johnson, which lasted until about four minutes past five this afternoon ...

Bearing in mind that until about an hour ago, Mr Cummings' future with the government was by no means assured, i think you will find the media have been biding their time - the next few days will be very interesting.

If you think this is 'minor', then you have a view of it that clearly does not chime with a massive number of people who have obeyed lockdown rules, and been made to feel angry and disgusted by a government employee who has flouted them.

Spicerack - // He was obviously adding to his previous post about Shapps talking to Marr. //
As far as I know, Andrew Marr does not come in here - I do, so which 'Andrew' is the more logical recipient of PP's post?
Why don't you stop making it all about me - which is your doing not mine, and get back to the thread, where everyone else is.

I am unaware of the circumstances of your friends, so would not presume to comment.
However, I am aware of Mr Cumming's circumstances, and the notion that he 'had no other option' is top fatuous to be given house room for one second.
He went to visit his family - OK, you can hold your hands up and apologise for that, but to spin the garbage that it was about 'child care' is insulting the intelligence of the nation, including me.
As I have said previously - I was born at night, but it wasn't last night.
