I paid in the old bangers are Aldi this morning but they were a bit sniffy. Cash was refused in a garage the other week. Do you think the retailers are using this to edge us towards a cashless society?

12.28 ^^^likewise.One of our local shops accepts cash but he puts it in a dish and washes it in disinfectant.
JD33: Banks charge business customers to provide change for their tills and, in many cases, for paying cash into their accounts too. The charges made for accepting card payments aren't greatly more than that, and can even be less.

Small traders (such as several burger van owners I know, some car booters and even a few Big Issue sellers) pay just 1.69% of their takings for accepting cards if they use one of these https://www.ryman.co.uk/sumup-air-card-payment-reader . Larger firms, such as the major supermarkets, negotiate deals with their banks where they pay far less than that.
havent used cash for years, but i do give the takeaway driver a tip

under those circumstances Danny probably wouldn't have a choice
The question still remains: how do you cater for those who have no bank accounts?
//under those circumstances Danny probably wouldn't have a choice//

No, and he would be minus what he came out for!
//…but these are exceptional circumstances.//

Beware, naomi. As I mentioned in another unrelated thread, measures taken “in exceptional circumstances” often have a habit of becoming permanent.

I paid in cash at Tesco the other day because I had some birthday money in a card and I bought myself some fizz. They were fine with it.
My local Aldi take cash, no problem.
