I paid in the old bangers are Aldi this morning but they were a bit sniffy. Cash was refused in a garage the other week. Do you think the retailers are using this to edge us towards a cashless society?

If ever we do go cashless, and I hope that we never do, then think of all those at the Royal mint losing their jobs. We will then have a vast industry in the one thing we've been trying to get rid of for years----Plastic. Is that what you really want?
I starting a new company - credit cards made from seaweed!
andres, the Royal Mint makes coins for over 60 countries so unless the whole world goes cashless it will be okay for a while
davebro, can I have mine quinoa-flavoured?
Always pay cash. Though today in Asda the self service machine would not except £50 note.
£50 notes seem to be shunned almost everywhere. Fear of forgery I suppose. Don't see the point of them if no-one will take them.
my hairdressers if they ever open again, only accept cash or cheque, they have never asked for card payment, nor will they i expect, fingers crossed they do open, as hair looking a right mess again.
Use both happily, but mainly cash.
During lockdown we have been sorting through the house and putting aside things to sell. There is now a whole room full of perfectly useable things that are too good to throw in the bin.
I intend to get to a car boot sale when they are allowed again so I can see no other way than accepting cash. I may have to have a dish of disinfectant on the table to drop money into!
jazzyjen.....mobile card reader? https://merchantmachine.co.uk/credit-card-machine/
Oops! Used cash today £1 for the trolley. Got it back tho'.
Jazz - I would expect cash only at a car boot.
Most places I use only accept cash or cheques. Supermarkets and Garages are the exception, but I use cash there sometimes. Hairdresser, masseuse, window cleaner, egg-man, greengrocery stall and local part-time P.O./shop only accept cash. Milkman accepts a cheque. Couldn't function without cash.
Theres over 1.3 million who dont or cant have a bank account for various reasons, no fixed abode, bankruptcy is another reason.
How are shops allowed to refuse Legal Tender?
Legal tender need not be accepted unless it is to settle a debt.

If you have an item in a shop, there is no debt so legal tender can be refused.

If you've had a meal in a restaurant, you have to pay after the meal has been eaten and you are in debt to the restaurant.

If the meal cost £30 and you had only two £20 notes, they would have to accept them but they need not give you any change.

I think they can while this pandemic is on, They use that reason due to Covid strictly card only, They did it during the earlier lockdowns where I live.
THECORBYLOON,i'm well impressed with that answer, thank you.
Nope, hasn't happened to me.
The only time I've used cash since last March was at a market stall where they would only take cards for over £5. I was tempted to tell them to stuff their strawberries but I relented and paid with filthy cash.
