I paid in the old bangers are Aldi this morning but they were a bit sniffy. Cash was refused in a garage the other week. Do you think the retailers are using this to edge us towards a cashless society?

The only time I have come across card payment only was last Friday, MOT at at my local council.
I knew this familily at the time, no wonder they had lots of cash, stories I can't tell.

Caffe Nero wasn't accepting cash when I was last in, they had notices up saying that it was card/app only to try and advertise the fact prior to customers getting to the point of ordering. I figured their premises so they can choose what to accept, or not in this case.

I'm sure there were some other places but it's been that long since I've actually been out and I rarely use cash.

There were some restrictions on the buses on handling cash too, they had to accept cash as they can't take card payments for certain fares on their machines, but it was exact change only, they would not give any change in cash. So, if you didn't have the right change, and couldn't pay by card, it was either get off or lose the difference.
I can remember that on certain buses as far back as the 70s. Exact fare only - no change given. The money went into a slot machine to which the drivers didn't have access. I think it was to stop fiddling by the drivers.
I can understand companies not wanting their employees handling cash by hand, but you cannot have a bus driver using plastic gloves can you?
If I use a bus I just swipe my card and take ticket.
I only use cash in my local shop.

I'm sure they are. They'd love it if they didn't have to deal with cash.
What about the kids? Are we going to start giving them debit cards?
Its not the shops that don't want cash, its the government . All transactions can then be traced. Drug dealing and the like of would be made very difficult, plus tax evasion.
I suppose it's just the Tory Government and nothing to do with Covid?
I agree with teacake. I have known of countless sole traders who offer discount for cash as it then doesn't have to go through the books and hence no VAT, to the benefit of both parties.
//What about the kids? Are we going to start giving them debit cards?//

Yes. Pocket money will be transferred directly into their account. It's happening already.
Nothing to do with Tory/ Labour, for any ones info, I voted Tory, and always have done, Its been desirable for a long time whoever has been in number 10. Its pretty obvious, to some why.
I also pay cash if it avoids VAT and a discount. Pay my window cleaner cash (and a cup of tea and biscuits) but I have other neighbours that have direct debit account with him. But to his credit he has never increased his original monthly fee, but fits us when he's passing.
You transfer a small child money just to buy some sweets. Ain't gonna happen.
Several of the local shops round here will only take cash, no cards, including my local fish and chip shop. I f you have a mobile hairdresser, a window cleaner, a chiropodist, a gardener, or a cleaner, or order a takeaway to be delivered to your door, they all expect to be paid in cash.
Unless you order your takeaway on Justeat.
My fish & chip shop have a PIN machine
Jackdaw // I think it was to stop fiddling by the drivers.//

I think it's more to stop mugging by the passengers. In Reading the in-town buses don't give change but the buses to Newbury do - the Newbury's don't run late at night.
