I only became aware of this today, that the government has voter ID plans whereby in order to vote at polling stations, voters will be required to show official photo ID (such as a passport, driver’s licence etc).

Many people do not hold such ID and will therefore be disenfranchised as a result of this legislation which is likely to impact the poorer sections of our society. Quite why the Labour Party is not up in arms against such plans I don’t know.

I can never understand the reasons of being against showing an ID,okay not everyone has a driving licence or passport but most people of voting age would have some form of identification?
'The government has voter ID plans'
Can you provide actual reliable details or is it just someone find raising
I don't Bobbisox, don't have driving licence or passport. I have no photo ID at all.
that is probably because there is nothing to be aware of:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/mar/09/warning-over-photo-id-law-change-for-uk-wide-and-english-elections

has yet to come up but I agree is expected
so as usual we deal with the problems ( if it be that) when they arise
You're about a year and a half behind the times, Hymie, but there's some interesting reading here:

no Chris
the idea is like cancer
it's come back!
Some of your beloved EUSSR countries, France and Italy notably for starters, demand photo ID before allowing their citizens to vote. We will also be adopting new regs. in 2023 to prevent voter fraud. The groups that have in the past benefited from Election fraud(notably local elections) are understandably dismayed at being thwarted. No more vote harvesting then and possibly thousands of ghost voters are busted.

The new plans will be set out in a new Electoral Integrity Bill which will be announced in the Queen’s speech in spring in a bid to get rid of electoral fraud.
Library cards, driving licences and passports will be accepted under the new system, differing from now when voters simply state their name and address.

Those without a form of photographic ID will have to get in touch with their local council who will provide them with a free document allowing them to vote.

""In their election manifesto, the Tories promised to “protect the integrity of our democracy, by introducing identification to vote at polling stations, stopping postal vote harvesting and measures to prevent any foreign interference in elections.""

Guess what the voter agreed with it and elected them ... that is democracy.
Voter ID already applies in N Ireland.
You apply for and get an elector ID card if need be.
It’s no big deal
Some people get very worked up about voter fraud. Even in other countries.
There’s your answer

If you don’t have any of the required voter ID, I’d recommend you apply for a postal vote.

Having a postal vote has a number of advantages, you won’t have to traipse to your local polling station to vote and unless you take very long vacations, you’ll never miss the opportunity to vote due to be away on holiday.
What about postal voting, where much of the fraud arises?

Togo – based on your logic, if the majority of voters voted to outlaw voting for an opposition party, you would accept this as democracy.
I don't see how democracy is "under threat".
^^ Talk about a "when did you stop beating your wife" question. Would you like me to invent a suitably nonsensical, but deserving, answer or would you think it is best to ignore the cant?
Oops! for me. My driving licence and passport are in my maiden name and I have no intention of changing that (having been divorced) but I live generally under my married name and am registered to vote under that. I can't be alone. I could produce my marriage cert., I suppose.
It isn’t
if voter fraud is the target then abolish postal voting.
//Many people do not hold such ID and will therefore be disenfranchised //

then they're gonna bloodywell have to get one, won't they? After all it's only about the most important thing a responsible citizen can do in a democracy.
Although, if you can invent a likely scenario as to how this is going to happen then it might be worth it for a laugh.
