I only became aware of this today, that the government has voter ID plans whereby in order to vote at polling stations, voters will be required to show official photo ID (such as a passport, driver’s licence etc).

Many people do not hold such ID and will therefore be disenfranchised as a result of this legislation which is likely to impact the poorer sections of our society. Quite why the Labour Party is not up in arms against such plans I don’t know.

"TTT what about those unable to get to voting station due to disability?" - how did they vote before? postal voting for the masses is a relatively new thing.
TTT they probably didn't vote.
Effectively disenfranchised
Proxy voting?

How long have we had that system?
//how did they vote before? postal voting for the masses is a relatively new thing.//

Absentee ballots have been in place since the American Civil War, so postal voting has been around a hell of a long time.
1948 when proxy voting was extended to civilians in the UK.
I once knew an elderly lady, staunch Conservative. When offered a lift she declined, saying that she would ring the Labour Party, as whilst they were carrying her they weren't carrying one of their own.
tony 22:53, cobras, they got out like they get out for other things they need to. If voting is important to them they'll vote, end of.
//I love the fact that those ABers who hate the EUSSR will cite things that the EUSSR do, to support things they want the UK to do//

The EU does not (yet) determine the voting procedure for its member nations. The individual nations do. There's lots of things that are done in EU member nations that I like and that I wished we'd do here. I have no issues with individual EU member nations (in the main, though I might make one or two exceptions if pressed!). It is the EU with which I have issues.

//Having been a sorter/counter, each ballot is numbered from the polling stn. Boxes are security sealed & delivered to counting stn.
I cant see how fraud could penetrate//

Have a read of the Lutfur Rahman ruling (warning, it's a long read):

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/judgment.pdf

In it you will see a whole host of methods used by Mr Rahman's team to influence voting. These include voter intimidation at polling stations; bribery; "treating" (a specific form of bribery); payment of canvassers; "spiritual injury" and undue influence (among others).

'end of' again??

Do you not know anyone who is housebound or even bedbound?

You do yourself no favours with such crass responses.
//...so postal voting has been around a hell of a long time.//

Yes it has. But until 2000 it was available only to those who had a specific reason (absent from home, disabled, serving in HM Forces, etc). It was not available universally on demand.
TTT some people don't get out of their house, shopping done online or by friends, nursing needs done by district nurses, two name just 2.

Yes Tony. And those people will be eligible for a postal vote as they were in the pre-2000 arrangements.
NJ read you short version. There are monitors now to control 1 ballot per person in a booth
stop having a fit! as the judge points out, I am talking about postal voting for the masses because they can't be arised to vote in person, end of.
What a pointless debate, the government’s plan explicitly states that “any voter who does not have an approved form of ID [i.e. a passport, driving licence, etc.] will be able to apply, free of charge, for a local electoral identity document.”

End of?
