Someone has to bump this idiot Putin off ......Swiftly,

//as the longer it persists the greater danger of it spreading elsewhere.//

Actually, for someone like Putin, I would have thought the opposite was more likely.
"By placing troops in the NATO countries near but not on the border it sends a message that we are willing to defend them. Its pretty straight forward."

Article 5 is pretty straightforward too

I hate to say it but I think Russia will be the victors ... which is really why I asked the question. 'Where next? And furthermore, will the rest of the world continue to allow the 'next' and the 'next' and the 'next' to happen? I can't see Russia stopping of its own volition.
Who cares about Article 5? You have to be flexible and react to the situation at hand.

I may well be wrong of course, it is just my personal opinion, but I would expect the decisions to come from top Generals, not Article 5 or any other article.
//And furthermore, will the rest of the world continue to allow the 'next' and the 'next' and the 'next' to happen? //

Yes, "I have in my hand a piece of paper".

Have lessons been learnt?
In my mind 2 things will happen. If Putin keeps hitting slush he will continue, if he hits steel he may stop and think twice. There will come a time very soon when we will have to put that steel in place, then we will no doubt find out for sure if Putins threats are real. But for sure we are dealing with a very grumpy old man here who can at any time completely lose his temper in a split second, and it only takes a moment of temper to release the worst.
//“ Hopefully this war in Ukraine will end quickly”

No thanks //

Full binary vision.
It could of course end with a negotiated settlement.
Dream on

You don’t “negotiate” at the barrel of a gun
An open question, as I have not been able to find an answer, does anyone know if Russias nuclear option can be released by Putin alone or does it need two or three people to 'press the button' ?
"Who cares about Article 5?"

NATO, its members and a post 9/11 USA.

"Yes, "I have in my hand a piece of paper". Have lessons been learnt?"

Ask Afghanistan, ex-Yugoslavia and Libya.
Just seen this, according to The Guardian they are deploying extra troops to NATO countries

You have lost me now, how do Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Libya compare to Russia? Did they have tin pot dictators who could threaten the West and wanted to rebuild a 'USSR' ?
Question Author
Naomi,In your link it mentions authorisation codes but does not give any indication as to who would issue them.I would hope that it would take someone besides Putin.

Best I could find at a quick glance, danny. It doesn't sound like it's just one person... but I don't know.
"You have lost me now, how do Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Libya compare to Russia?"

I did not compare them to Russia.
They all came under the NATO heel.

Obviously rooting for the latter.

Putin is relying on the nuke threat...imo Russia would get battered in a conventional war. As horrible as it sound we have to take the risk of nuclear war or else he won't stop.
President Zelensky has put the word out. Come defend Ukraine we have weapons to give you.
Wonder if a International brigade like Spain 1935.
