A long queue winding its way past a Chanel shop to a cash machine. Those people must remember the days not so long ago when even the idea of a Chanel shop in Russia was out of the question - the days when there was nothing to buy - when there were queues for bread - when most who didn’t live in dismal tenement blocks drew their water from wells - when people waited years to have a phone installed in their homes or to buy a car - and the notion of leaving the country to holiday in foreign climes was nothing more than a dream. Such was Communist Russia. They must remember - and if they do, having had a good taste of freedom and affluence, with the madman that is Putin at the helm they must be fearful that a return to those dreadful times is imminent.
There are times when I share Naomi's hopes about chances of the "strongest opponent com[ing] from within", and times I don't. Reading this article is a time when I don't.

Hopefully this sort of position becomes increasingly rarer, but as long as those protesting this War in Russia number "only" in the tens of thousands, Putin et al can safely ignore it. It's enough to make you despair.

//And there is probably also an element of denial in many people.
They simply refuse to believe Russia would do that sort of thing. //
I think that's true. But they have the internet .... they can see what the rest of the world is saying (well, most of the rest of the world at least). How long before the penny drops and they realise that to Putin they're just as expendable as everyone else. History should have taught them.

I think it more likely that, for most people who rely on State media, the penny won't drop until the current State does. As long as Putin controls what people know, the majority will back him -- or, at least, enough will that any Opposition is ineffective. The blocking of the BBC, as well as Twitter, Facebook etc, illustrates this.
There's a limit on the extent to which the flow of information can be controlled, for sure. If, for example, the War drags on, and continues to cost Russians dear in terms of lives lost, then no amount of censorship can cover up from the families of the dead soldiers that they're dead (or at the very least permanently out of contact).

Personally. In many ways I am feeling as sorry for Russians as I am for those in the Ukraine. My sister in law phoned yesterday in tears and very distraught. I can also say that having a Russian Surname makes me feel very much the
same. My other half can't even talk about it or follow the news.
I find it very difficult reading posts on here that say things such as 'Russian Rats'.

“If these experts are interfered with by the russians it will leave western governments with no option to send“
Unlikely.
Plainly the objective of this attack was to control a large part of Ukraine’s power supply. That’s why ordinary people had set up barricades outside the plant bays ago.
On a no fly zone, i suspect it would not lead to WWIII of applied neutrally, but the risk is probably too great. The essential issue with it is it would also ground anti-Russian planes.

er yeah it is the nature of the world- you're not a flat earther by any chance are you?
nice to see it took AB until 11 today to notice that they had bombed a nuclear power station - the news said that all the nuclear power stations were off line - presumably that makes them safer if they blow up and / or are blown up
thx for keeping us up to date Ich - we are much obliged
