Why So Few Black And Asian People At Glastonbury?
Lenny Henry, that stalwart champion of 'diversity', says he is “always surprised” by the lack of black and brown people at Glastonbury, as he called for better representation of ethnic minorities in all facets of British society.
Are they prevented from buying tickets - or is it that they just don't fancy living for several days in a tent in a muddy field?

Much like Diane Abbott (who is a racist), David Lammy and a few others, Lenny Henry sees racism in pretty much everything, but to crowbar a racist slant into black people choosing not to attend Glastonbury is absurd.

//You still don’t know what you’re talking about. Empirical evidence is just that.
Lambeth:
Black people make up a quarter of the population (25%) etc.//
And you still don’t understand what I’m saying (or you don’t read or deliberately ignore what I’ve written):
//If you wander round Brixton Market, Electric Avenue and the Acre Lane area, particularly at night, you will not see much of the diversity you mention and those out and about will most certainly not be reflective of the published ethnic make up of the borough as a whole.//
Brixton is not populated exclusively by black people. I never claimed it was. The London Borough of Hackney is not populated exclusively by Hasidic Jews. But if you go to parts of Stamford Hill you will find large concentrations of them and a large number of people you see will be of that type (in this case people you are very unlikely to see elsewhere except in a few other areas where they gather). They don’t go to Glastonbury either but they tend to gather together and live in the same areas. It’s what many people – especially minorities – often do.
There's nothing wrong with them gathering in Stamford Hill or with them not going to Glastonbury. It's what they've chosen to do. If Mr Henry had added, alongside his criticism of Glastonbury, a similar criticism of a place like the Four Aces (which I'm sure there are some about) he might have a valid point. But since he hasn't he just seems, like many of his ilk (not all of them black by any means) to want to highlight a problem that does not exist.

To assume that this is due to race or religious adherence is overly simplistic. If Stamford Hill were the only place where Hasidic Jews lived, then I'd concede you'd have a point, but it isn't. The concentration will be down to a number of factors which I've already mentioned.
Regarding your assumptions - have you ever discussed social mobility with your black mates?
What do THEY say on the subject?

SP, I can't speak for others but I don't use the phrase for that reason. He's 'proud' that Comic Relief will stop sending white celebrities to Africa. Blatant racism - and damagingly counter-productive to boot.

SP, // I wonder whether he really does have a chip on his shoulder or whether that's a phrase that certain people use to try and shut down all discussions of race….//
That was the question I was answering.
//when the 'wrong' people dare to say something?//
That bit of your question I discount. It's offensive.

But I do.
100%.
You go onto say:
"As always, racism, in your mind, works only one way... and all us terrible whiteys are guilty of it. You and Lenny Henry make a pair... not a good pair ... but a pair nonetheless."
You seem angry. Not sure why. Surely everyone's entitled to their own opinion based on their life experiences?
You have yours and if others don't share your opinion, then chest la via. No big deal.
It's no good throwing out remarks like those above because it's statements like that that had to petty squabbles on AB. I've seen them occur over and over on the News section.

For what ever reason the answer must be that the black/brown people Henry mentions do not want to go to Glastonbury.
Just as an aside, I am happy to be corrected but I never saw any post on AB about the Black to Front day on Channel 4 last September.
