Without being voyeuristic, people need to understand the reality of war. I think it has become over-sanitised though screens, videos etc.. I do know that it was not until I walked through a peaceful woodland path in Germany to reach a clearing where, unexpectedly and shockingly, the Iron Curtain existed and cold-eyed East-Germans were pointing Kalashnikovs at me that I truly felt the fear and understanding. I am very worried about the way some European countries are trying to persuade themselves that its not really enough for them to hurt themselves economically to stop this barbarism.
Perhaps the West has had peace for too long to understand that peace comes at the cost of vigilance and offering a threat against enemies?
