Togo - // Lady Hussey, after officiating and attending gatherings such as this for decades, decided to "create" a fuss because she though the attention thereafter would be a jolly good wheeze, and Ms Fulani decided to use a nom de plume, don Nigerian National costume and be as evasive regarding her true origins as possible whilst either recording the proceedings or having an "acquaintance" to hand who could provide forensic level confirmation of her "account". All without any forethought or malicious intent as she has been inclined to demonstrate previously. Nice to have it all cleared up is it not? //
Interesting - and fictional, as you well know.
This was an unfortunate incident which got blown out of all proportion.
I don't believe, and I don;t think anyone would, that either party went out on that day with the intention of causing upset or offence to anyone in any way, or to create a situation with forethought to assume victimhood and make a noise about it.
Lady Hussey's approach was wrong, she admitted it, she apologised and she resigned of her own volition.
Ms Fulani defended herself, as she is absolutely entitled to do, and then decided to make a meal out of the whole sorry business, making herself far more 'damaged' than she was, and making personal promotional capital out of the whole business.
My contributions to this thread have been broadly along these lines - and they have evolved as circumstances have changed and more information has been made available -
To hold Lady Hussey responsible for the initial situation, which she has been happy to admit was her responsibility.
To defend Ms Fulani's right to take offence and call out the offender at the time.
To entirely appreciate Lady Hussey's rapid apology, regret her resignation, and understand that this was in no way a racist incident, or inentional in any way.
To castigate Ms Fulani's unwillingness to accept the apology graciously, and to let the matter drop, but instead to make media capital out of something, by making it appear far more serious and damaging than it actually was.
And most of all - to remain utterly baffled at the vigour and stamina of those posters on here who have made it their bsuiness over the last week to dig out any and all negative facts about Ms Fulani, effectively to suggest that she deserved what she got because she is a 'liar'.
I don't believe that to be true, I have argued, and still argue those positions tonight, and will do so until the thread runs out of steam, and experience tells me that all threads, even record-breaking threads like this one, do eventually fade away.
